Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly capable of completing entire workflows rather than simply answering questions. However, many AI assistants still rely on cloud infrastructure to process information, raising questions about privacy, recurring costs and how much control users have over their own data. Perplexity is addressing these concerns with a new fully local mode for […]
On 16 September 2026 four marketing and management scholars published an analysis in The Conversation arguing that advertising inside AI assistants is structurally different from anything the web has done before, because the ad sits inside the generated answer rather than beside it. The piece opens with Brin and Page’s 1998 warning that advertising-funded search would be inherently biased toward advertisers. This article covers what OpenAI, Google and Perplexity have shipped, the four risks the underlying research identifies, why fact-checking and media literacy do not reach private ephemeral chats, and what a policy response would have to cover.
Perplexity’s Portable Computer now runs on Windows PCs with 24GB NVIDIA GeForce RTX and RTX PRO GPUs. We check which cards qualify, why only 1.50% of Steam systems clear the bar, why Windows gets PPLX 27B rather than Qwen 3.8 27B, how setup runs through Personal Computer, and what scheduled local tasks save in credits.
Leaked screenshots show a Money tab and a bank-linking onboarding screen in the Claude iOS app. We set out what the Claude Money leak confirms, what it does not, how it compares with ChatGPT Finances and Perplexity, the connectors that already bring finance data into Claude, and the privacy and US-only launch questions Anthropic still has to answer.
TestingCatalog has surfaced Hybrid mode, an unreleased setting in Perplexity Computer’s Mac app that keeps orchestration in the cloud while delegating suitable subtasks to a model running locally, plus a Privacy Gate model that checks outbound data for personal information and asks the user before it is sent. This article covers the three downloadable local models (a 19GB Perplexity model, Qwen 32B at 17.4GB, and a 5.6GB Gemma-based model for 16GB Macs), which Mac mini configurations qualify, how Privacy Gate differs from June’s hybrid agentic inference design, the credit arithmetic the feature targets, how it compares with the Nvidia-only Portable Computer, and what a UK business should do about a feature that is still hidden and undated.
Perplexity announced Portable Computer on 25 August 2026, built in close partnership with Nvidia: the full agentic Computer stack — model, inference engine, agent harness, tools, connectors and sandbox — running on your own hardware, where local work consumes no billing credits. It needs an Nvidia RTX GPU with at least 24GB of VRAM or a DGX Spark, runs on DGX OS or Ubuntu with Windows due in September 2026, and offers Qwen 3.8 27B, Perplexity’s post-trained PPLX 27B and, soon, Nvidia’s Nemotron 3.5 Lightning. This breakdown covers the hardware floor, the per-step cloud escalation flow, Perplexity’s own benchmark numbers, what zero token costs actually excludes, and who should pilot it now.
Perplexity is reportedly testing a granular effort selector for Perplexity Computer, its cloud-based agentic AI product. The leak, spotted by TestingCatalog on 23 August 2026, confirms a low effort mode aimed directly at reducing credit consumption — the loudest complaint about Computer since its February launch. This article separates what the leak confirms from what remains unknown, lays out Perplexity Computer’s pricing and real-world credit burn figures, compares effort and reasoning controls across OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and xAI, and explains what a granular effort selector would mean for businesses budgeting for agentic AI.
A practical guide to Perplexity, covering what it is, how its answer engine works, what the plans include, and where the platform still has limits.
