Google is retiring Gemini Gems. Creating and editing stops on 13 October 2026 and Gems migrate automatically to Skills in Gemini Spark on 17 November. We trace how the plan changed since August, compare Gems with Skills, explain why free, work and UK users may lose out, and list what to save now.
Google released the Gemini app for Windows on 10 September 2026, built around an Alt + Space shortcut that opens Gemini over any window. We read Google’s download page, Help Center and Spark support pages alongside Microsoft’s and OpenAI’s shortcut documentation and the first hands-on reviews, and found six claimants on the same keys, three Mac features Windows does not get yet, and a Spark agent Google’s own support page does not list for Windows or offer in the UK.
TestingCatalog reported on 5 September 2026 that closed builds of the Gemini desktop app carry connections to Obsidian, a macOS Finder action that sends any folder straight to Gemini, and a new toggle splitting the app into Ask and Assign modes. This article covers exactly what was found, why an Obsidian vault is really just a folder, how the features fit Google’s four-month local-file rollout, and what teams should weigh before granting any assistant read access to a knowledge base.
A practical guide to Gemini Spark, Google’s 24/7 AI agent for background tasks, Workspace automation, connected apps, and enterprise readiness.
