Symptom & Impact
Internal names resolve, but internet domains intermittently fail with timeout responses. Application updates and package repositories become unreliable.
Environment & Reproduction
Observed after upstream DNS changes, firewall ACL updates, or forwarders pointing to decommissioned resolvers. Reproduce by blocking outbound UDP/TCP 53 to configured forwarders.
Root Cause Analysis
Forwarders are unreachable, overloaded, or misordered; DNS server waits per-query timeout and falls back slowly. Root hints may also be disabled or stale.
Quick Triage
Validate resolver reachability, test external name resolution with Resolve-DnsName, and inspect DNS server event logs for forwarder failure entries.
Step-by-Step Diagnosis
Review server forwarder list, check latency to each target, test recursion behavior, and compare behavior with root hints temporarily enabled.
Solution – Primary Fix
Replace unreachable forwarders, keep at least two healthy resolvers, allow outbound DNS in firewall, and restart DNS service to clear resolver state.

Solution – Alternative Approaches
If forwarders are controlled externally, use root hints as temporary fallback or deploy local caching resolvers in each site.
Verification & Acceptance Criteria
External queries return consistently under 300ms, DNS timeout events stop, and recursive lookup success stays stable during peak periods.
Rollback Plan
Restore previous forwarder set from backup configuration if new resolvers behave worse, then re-test recursion and latency before finalizing.
Prevention & Hardening
Monitor resolver health continuously, document ownership of upstream DNS endpoints, and review firewall rules in every network change window.
