Shopify Canvas is a new way to build an online store by talking to an AI agent instead of dragging blocks around a theme editor. Shopify announced it on 1 October 2026 and says it is rolling out to merchants “over the coming days”. Merchants describe their brand to Sidekick, Shopify’s AI agent, and watch the store take shape across every page at once.
The pitch is speed and freedom. “Today, an entrepreneur on Shopify can build a fully custom store in twenty minutes,” says Ben Sehl, Director of Product at Shopify. Shopify Canvas also has real limits at launch: it works only on desktop, only with Shopify-built or custom themes, and without app blocks, market-specific designs or theme updates.
This article explains what Shopify Canvas is, how it works step by step, what Sidekick does behind the scenes, how it builds on Shopify’s earlier AI tools, what it cannot do yet, and whether your business should try it now. What Shopify Canvas Is
Shopify calls Canvas “a new design surface where merchants build with Sidekick.” In plain terms, it is a large zoomable workspace that shows the whole store, with a chat box for giving instructions.
A workspace for the whole store
When you open Shopify Canvas, every template in your theme appears side by side in a zoomed-out overview: home page, product pages, collections, cart and so on. You can pan across them to see how the store feels as a whole, then zoom in to work on one page. Shopify says this is the first time merchants can see every page laid out together.
Sidekick does the building
The main way to make changes is to ask. You type a request into a “Work with Sidekick” field, and Sidekick edits the theme. You can still click a block and change its settings yourself, or edit text directly in the preview. Shopify says Sidekick “asks questions, proposes approaches, and takes feedback”, and remembers earlier design decisions so you do not have to repeat them.
Real code, not a mock-up
The preview in Shopify Canvas is not a static picture. Shopify says merchants see “a render of the real code behind the store”, with full interactivity and animation. You can preview pages with different products and collections, and at different screen widths. That sets it apart from design tools that produce a mock-up someone then has to rebuild in code.
How Shopify Canvas Works, Step by Step
Shopify’s help centre sets out the workflow in detail. Here is what a merchant actually does.
Start a new theme
From the Shopify admin, go to Online Store and click New. A Sidekick chat opens. Describe your brand and the store you want, and Sidekick builds a theme from that description and opens it in Shopify Canvas. The new theme is added to your theme library as unpublished, so customers see nothing until you choose to publish.
Or duplicate an existing theme
If you already have a supported theme, choose “Duplicate in Canvas”. A copy opens in Shopify Canvas and the original stays in your library. The two are separate from then on, so changes made in one do not appear in the other. Shopify warns merchants to check which copy they publish.
Make changes in four ways
You can ask Sidekick for a change to the whole theme, select a block and ask for a change to that block, change a block’s settings, or edit text in the preview. Theme-wide settings such as colours and typography sit behind an icon in the top bar. You can run more than one Sidekick chat at a time, which lets you start a second request while the first is still running.
Find your way around
The top bar holds a “Jump to…” menu that goes straight to any template, plus undo, redo, version history and the publish button. Hovering over the theme name shows whether it is your live theme or a draft. Product and collection templates preview one item at a time; click the URL path in the template header to swap in a different product, or the template name to see its variations.
Check every screen size
Open any template in full-screen view to preview it at desktop, tablet or mobile width, or drag the handles to set your own. Shopify tells merchants to review changes at each width before publishing.
Publish when ready
Shopify Canvas saves changes automatically, and there is no save button. Publishing makes changes live. If a theme cannot be published, the dialog lists the errors and offers a “Fix with Sidekick” button. One detail is easy to miss: when Sidekick makes a change, your undo history is cleared, so you reverse its work by asking it to change back or by restoring an earlier version from the theme history.
| Task | How it works in Shopify Canvas |
|---|---|
| Create a store design | Online Store, then New, then describe your brand to Sidekick |
| Redesign an existing theme | “Duplicate in Canvas” on a supported theme |
| Add a new block | Ask Sidekick; blocks cannot be added manually |
| Change text | Edit in the preview, except on some older themes |
| Save | Automatic |
| Undo a Sidekick change | Ask Sidekick to revert, or restore from theme history |
| Go live | Publish (new theme) or Update (live theme) |
Under the Hood: Sidekick as a Coding Agent
Shopify Canvas is the front end. The real change is in what Sidekick is now allowed to do.
Direct access to theme files
Shopify says Sidekick “now works directly on the theme’s files, guided by instructions and skills for building stores.” It has also simplified theme architecture so that “the store’s structure, logic, and design” are easier for Sidekick to understand and change. Without that, an agent would struggle to make coordinated edits across the many templates and files that make up a theme.
It checks its own work
Sidekick validates the code it writes and takes screenshots to inspect how its changes landed in Shopify Canvas. It uses both kinds of feedback to refine its work in a loop before handing the result back. Shopify says that lets it handle “small section changes to store-wide redesigns.”
Taste was the hard part
“Getting Sidekick to write code was easy, but guiding it to make good design decisions took a great deal of time and attention,” says Austin Knight, design director at Shopify. He says every theme has “a unique design contract, a curated set of patterns to draw from, and a mountain of opinionated eval data.”
The scale behind it
Sidekick already edits themes at volume. Shopify says it made “more than twenty-five million edits to themes in the first half of 2026”, alongside generating apps and custom theme sections.
How Shopify Canvas Builds on Earlier AI Tools
Shopify has been adding AI to store design for more than a year. Shopify Canvas pulls those pieces into one product.
Summer ’25: Horizon and AI blocks
In May 2025, Shopify’s Summer ’25 Edition introduced Horizon, a new theme foundation built on theme blocks, along with AI block generation (“describe what you need, like ‘seasonal discount banner'”) and an AI Store Builder that produced designs from a short description of a brand.
Winter ’26: Sidekick writes code
In December 2025, the Winter ’26 Edition turned Sidekick from an assistant into what Shopify called “a proactive collaborator” that “can also build code and make changes directly.” Merchants could click an element in the theme editor and ask Sidekick to change it, and build custom admin apps by prompting.
October 2026: the whole store in one view
TechCrunch points out that Sidekick “had yet to be pulled together into a full site-building product” where users can see the entire store at once while it edits the site’s actual files. That is the gap Shopify Canvas fills.
| Release | Date | AI design features |
|---|---|---|
| Summer ’25 Edition | 21 May 2025 | Horizon themes, AI block generation, AI Store Builder |
| Winter ’26 Edition | 10 December 2025 | Sidekick edits themes by chat and builds admin apps |
| First half of 2026 | January to June | Sidekick makes more than 25 million theme edits |
| Shopify Canvas | 1 October 2026 | Whole-store workspace with Sidekick editing theme files |
Shopify Canvas Limits at Launch
Shopify is open that the product is early. “We’re early here and Canvas is not replacing the existing editor yet,” says Sehl. “Things will change quickly, and there are gaps we still need to close.”
Who can use it
The help centre lists four requirements. Shopify Canvas runs only on desktop. It is available on plans that include theme customisation, and if you move to a plan without it, you can view Canvas themes but not edit or publish them. It works only with themes developed by Shopify and with custom themes; third-party themes are not supported. And staff need the “Online store > Themes > Edit code” permission to open it.
A permission worth thinking about
That last requirement deserves attention. Edit-code access lets a person change any part of the storefront theme, including scripts that run on every page. Granting it to more staff so they can use an AI design tool is a cybersecurity decision as much as a design one, so keep the list short and review it.
What it cannot do yet
You cannot add or configure app blocks or app embeds, customise a theme for different markets, or translate content inside Shopify Canvas (Shopify points merchants to its Translate & Adapt app). You cannot manually add a block; you have to ask Sidekick. A theme edited in Canvas does not receive theme updates, and you cannot download its files.
| Limit | What it means | Workaround |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop only | No editing from a phone or tablet | Use a laptop or desktop |
| No third-party themes | Many paid themes cannot be opened | Start a new theme in Canvas |
| No app blocks or embeds | Reviews, upsell or loyalty widgets cannot be placed | Keep app-heavy pages on your current theme |
| No market customisation | One design for every region | Wait if you sell in several markets |
| No in-Canvas translation | Translations happen elsewhere | Use the Translate & Adapt app |
| No theme updates | Fixes from the theme developer will not arrive | Ask Sidekick for fixes, and test often |
| No file download | You cannot export the theme code | Weigh this before relying on it |
Time and Cost: What Shopify Canvas Could Change
The case for Shopify Canvas rests on two claims: that it is fast, and that it removes the need to pay for design work.
Twenty minutes versus two weeks
Sehl gives a personal comparison. “When I built Kotn 12 years ago, I knew how to code and it still took me two weeks to get a rough store working,” he says. With Shopify Canvas, he says, an entrepreneur “can build a fully custom store in twenty minutes.”
Elapsed time to a working store in Ben Sehl’s comparison, in hours (bar length relative to 336)
Two weeks is 14 × 24 = 336 hours, and twenty minutes is 20 ÷ 60 = 0.33 hours, so the second bar is 0.33 ÷ 336 = 0.1% of the first and barely shows. These are Sehl’s own figures, they are elapsed time and not hours of work, and one is a rough hand-coded store while the other is a Shopify Canvas design. Treat the gap as an illustration, not a benchmark.
What designers cost
When Shopify launched Horizon in 2025, it quoted Ben Attwood, founder of Clubhouse Skin, who said that with Horizon available at launch he “could have launched my [store] without the need for external support and saved £5000–7000.” That is the kind of spend Shopify Canvas aims to replace for small merchants.
Where developers still fit
Anything that depends on a third-party theme, app blocks, several markets or exported code still needs the standard editor or a developer. Larger brands will also want version control, testing and performance work that a chat window does not provide. If your store needs custom functionality, our software development team builds it.
Shopify Canvas Against Other AI Site Builders
Shopify Canvas enters a crowded field. TechCrunch lists AI site-building tools from Wix, Squarespace, Webflow and Framer, plus vibe-coding platforms such as Lovable and Replit.
Commerce is built in
Shopify’s advantage is that the store already sits on its checkout, catalogue and payments. Sidekick works inside that system and, in Shopify’s words, is “a coding agent designed for commerce.” A general vibe-coding tool can produce a handsome site, but the merchant still has to wire up products, payments and tax. For the risks of general vibe coding, see our look at the rise and risk of vibe coding.
The lock-in question
Shopify Canvas themes cannot be downloaded, and they no longer receive updates from the theme developer. That ties the design more closely to Shopify and to Sidekick than a standard theme does. For many small merchants that is acceptable. For brands that want an exit route or a developer-maintained codebase, it is a reason to wait.
What Shopify Canvas Means for Agencies and Freelancers
Shopify has a large community of designers and developers who build stores for merchants. Shopify Canvas changes some of their work and leaves much of it untouched.
Less routine theme work
Small jobs such as restyling a home page, adding a banner or reworking a product page layout are exactly what Sidekick now does from a sentence. Merchants who paid a freelancer for that kind of change may now try Shopify Canvas first. Sidekick was already making millions of theme edits a month before Canvas arrived.
More demand for the hard parts
The gaps at launch map closely onto specialist work: app integrations, multi-market setups, translations, performance tuning, migrations and custom functionality. Agencies that sell strategy, conversion work and integrations, not hours of theme editing, are better placed. Some will also be asked to review or repair AI-built stores, much as developers are now asked to fix vibe-coded apps.
Should Your Business Use Shopify Canvas?
The answer depends on where your store is today.
A good fit
New merchants, small teams without a designer, and stores already on a Shopify-built theme with few apps stand to gain most. Shopify Canvas lets them get to a distinctive design without hiring help, and a new theme can be built and reviewed without touching the live store.
Worth waiting
Hold off if you use a paid third-party theme, rely on apps that place blocks on your pages, sell in several markets with different designs, or need translations managed in the design tool. Shopify told TechCrunch it plans to support these over time, so check back as the gaps close.
How to trial it safely
Duplicate your theme in Canvas rather than editing your live one, and keep the original. Review each template at every width. Before publishing, check that URLs, page titles and redirects survive, using our website redesign SEO checklist, and test accessibility against our WCAG 2.2 checklist. An AI-built design still has to work for every customer.
| Your situation | Shopify Canvas now? |
|---|---|
| New store, no designer | Yes, once your store has access |
| Shopify-built theme, few apps | Yes, on a duplicate theme |
| Paid third-party theme | Not yet supported |
| App blocks on key pages | Wait |
| Several markets or languages | Wait |
| Developer-maintained custom theme | Possible, but you lose file downloads and updates |
