TikTok shopping is moving out of the TikTok Shop tab and into the main feed. On 5 October 2026, TikTok announced Shopping Assistant, a conversational AI agent that answers product questions and helps people buy, and Buy Direct, a one-click checkout that lets users purchase straight from a brand from the For You feed without leaving the app. Both are being built with commerce and payment partners including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe.
The news came at Advertising Week New York, as part of a wider set of AI tools for advertisers, and was reported by TechCrunch. It puts TikTok in the same race as OpenAI, Google, Amazon and Meta: whoever answers the shopper’s question also wants to take the payment.
This article explains what TikTok announced, how Buy Direct differs from TikTok Shop, what the Shopping Assistant does, the numbers behind the move, why AI assistants are chasing checkout, and what brands in the UK and elsewhere should ask before they switch it on.

What TikTok Announced for TikTok Shopping
TikTok’s newsroom post describes “new Agentic Commerce shopping experiences that support easy product discovery and frictionless transactions on the platform, starting with Buy Direct and Shopping Assistant”. The two TikTok shopping features sat alongside five other announcements.

“Rolls out” or “building”?
TechCrunch says TikTok is launching the features. TikTok’s own wording is more cautious: it “is building” the experiences, “starting with” Buy Direct and Shopping Assistant. The post gives no launch dates, no list of markets and no merchant eligibility criteria. Read this as an announcement of direction with early availability, not a finished global rollout of the new TikTok shopping tools.
What TikTok said about AI
“AI is transforming how advertiser content is created and scaled,” said David Kaufman, TikTok’s global head of monetisation product partnerships. “With our suite of solutions, we [are] bringing together AI, automation, and creativity to help advertisers improve performance while reducing effort.”
How Buy Direct Changes TikTok Shopping
Until now, buying on TikTok mostly meant TikTok Shop, the in-house marketplace that launched in the US in September 2023. Buy Direct is a different model: the shopper buys from the brand, inside TikTok, in one tap.
TikTok Shop, Buy Direct and a link-out compared
The table sets out what is known about each route. Where TikTok has not said, we say so.
| Question | TikTok Shop | Buy Direct | Link to brand site |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who sells | Seller on TikTok’s marketplace | The brand, directly | The brand |
| Does the shopper leave TikTok? | No | No | Yes |
| Where it appears | Shop tab, videos, LIVE | For You feed and other touchpoints | Profile, ads, bio links |
| Commerce back end | TikTok Shop Seller Center | Partners such as Shopify, Salesforce, Shoplazza; payments via partners such as Stripe | Brand’s own store |
| Fees | TikTok Shop fee schedule | Not stated | Ad costs only |
| Markets | Several, including the US and UK | Not stated | Anywhere |
Why partners matter
Naming Shopify, Salesforce and Shoplazza suggests Buy Direct will plug into a brand’s existing commerce platform, so the order lands in the brand’s own system rather than a separate marketplace account. Stripe on the payments side points the same way. TikTok has not published the technical details, so brands should confirm with their platform provider before planning around it.
The impulse problem, solved for TikTok
The friction Buy Direct removes is the moment a shopper leaves the app, waits for a page to load, and reconsiders. TechCrunch put it plainly: TikTok is “turning its impulse-driven discovery feed into a place where users can get answers to questions about a product and make a purchase on the spot”. That is good for conversion, and a reason for brands to think about returns.
Inside the TikTok Shopping Assistant
TikTok describes Shopping Assistant as “a conversational AI agent that guides users through their shopping journey”. It “understands context, remembers user needs, and finds the right products just for them, faster”.
What it answers
The assistant gives “realtime AI-powered shopping guidance like product details, shipping, sizing, availability and purchasing all within one conversation”, according to TikTok. It is built into “several TikTok touchpoints”, although TikTok has not listed which ones.
Where the answers come from
Industry site WeRSM reports that TikTok’s business materials say the assistant can draw on brand-approved information from a merchant knowledge base, including product details, offers and frequently asked questions. Under the hood this is a natural language processing problem: matching a shopper’s loosely worded question to the right product facts.
Why TikTok wants shoppers to ask it, not ChatGPT
TechCrunch notes that by building the assistant into its own app, TikTok hopes users “will stay within its platform when they have questions about a product, rather than turning to outside AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT”. Every question answered elsewhere is a sale TikTok might lose.
Memory and privacy
TechCrunch reports that the assistant “remembers users’ preferences and needs throughout the conversation”. TikTok has not said whether that memory carries over between sessions, or whether what shoppers tell the assistant feeds ad targeting. Shoppers who care about that should check TikTok’s privacy settings once the TikTok shopping assistant reaches them, and brands should not assume conversation data will be shared with them.
What it will not fix
An assistant can only be as accurate as the data behind it. If a brand’s sizing chart is wrong, or stock levels lag, the TikTok shopping assistant will repeat the error confidently, at the moment of purchase. Under UK consumer law, the brand remains responsible for what it tells customers.
The Numbers Behind TikTok Shopping
The TikTok shopping business is large enough that a small change in checkout friction is worth a lot of money.
TikTok Shop’s share of US social commerce
Market research firm eMarketer estimates TikTok Shop generated about $15.8 billion in US sales in 2025, about 18% of all US social commerce. Dividing one by the other implies a total US social commerce market of roughly $87.8 billion ($15.8 billion divided by 0.18), leaving about $72.0 billion outside TikTok Shop.
Buy Direct is aimed partly at that remaining 82%: brands that sell socially but not through TikTok Shop.
The economic impact report
A week before the launch, TikTok published an economic impact report by PF Global. It estimates that activity on TikTok supported $81 billion in US GDP and 410,000 jobs in 2025, that 54 million Americans bought a product after watching a TikTok video, and that 1.8 million American entrepreneurs sold through the platform. It was commissioned by TikTok, so treat it as the company’s case rather than independent measurement.
Where marketers plan to spend
TikTok also cited Kantar’s Media Reactions 2026 study, which ranked TikTok as the number one platform where marketers plan to increase ad spending in 2027, with 84% of marketers placing advertising on TikTok.
How TikTok Shopping Got Here
The new tools build on three years of commerce work. The timeline puts them in order.
| When | TikTok shopping milestone |
|---|---|
| September 2023 | TikTok Shop launches in the US |
| 2025 | TikTok Shop reaches about $15.8 billion in US sales, about 18% of US social commerce (eMarketer) |
| 12 May 2026 | TikTok for Business MCP launches at TikTok World for agent-driven campaign management |
| 2 October 2026 | TikTok publishes its US economic impact report |
| 5 October 2026 | Buy Direct, Shopping Assistant and Agentic Leads announced at Advertising Week New York |
From marketplace to infrastructure
TikTok Shop made TikTok a retailer. Buy Direct makes it closer to a payments and checkout layer that brands plug into. That is a bigger ambition: TikTok shopping no longer has to happen inside TikTok’s own marketplace to be captured by TikTok.
The agent layer
The TikTok for Business MCP, which lets outside agents plan and manage ad campaigns, has seen advertiser use rise by more than 200% since launch, according to TikTok. It is now a connector in Claude, Kimi, Manus, Perplexity, Replit, Snowflake, Tencent WorkBuddy and the IAB Tech Lab Agent Registry. Put that next to the Shopping Assistant and Agentic Leads, and TikTok is building agents on both sides: one helping brands buy ads, one helping shoppers buy products.
Who runs TikTok in the US now
The economic impact report was issued by TikTok USDS Joint Venture, which describes itself as a majority-American company that operates and secures the platform in the US. Its chief executive, Adam Presser, said more than 200 million Americans use TikTok to discover something new. For brands, the practical point is that US launches of new TikTok shopping features may now follow a different path from other markets.
Why Every AI Assistant Wants the TikTok Shopping Checkout
The new TikTok shopping push is part of a broader race to turn AI assistants into shops, often called agentic commerce.
The rivals
OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in ChatGPT on 29 September 2025, starting with Etsy sellers in the US and Shopify merchants to follow, built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol it developed with Stripe. Merchants remain the merchant of record. Amazon, meanwhile, has blocked outside agents such as Meta’s Muse from shopping on its site, which we covered in our piece on Amazon barring Meta’s Muse.
What shoppers say they want
An IAB study released in September, based on 2,200 consumers in the US, UK, Australia, Mexico and India who had used AI for shopping research, suggests TikTok has an advantage: creators.
TikTok’s edge, and its open question
Most AI shoppers use general assistants today, not TikTok shopping tools, but many want creator input in the advice. TikTok has more creator product content than any chatbot. What TikTok has not said is whether its TikTok shopping assistant will actually cite or draw on creator videos, or only on brand-supplied data.
Ads next to answers
The same pressure is pushing assistants towards advertising. OpenAI has started showing visual ads alongside image results in ChatGPT. TikTok is approaching from the other direction: an ad platform adding an assistant.
What TikTok Shopping Changes for Brands
For brands, the new TikTok shopping tools shift work from creative to data. The assistant and the checkout both depend on accurate, structured product information.
Product data becomes the sales script
Sizing, materials, shipping times, stock levels and returns policies are what the assistant will quote. If those are incomplete or inconsistent across your Shopify catalogue, product pages and FAQs, the assistant will expose it. A tidy, well-structured catalogue is now a conversion asset, a point we made in our comparison of composable, headless and MACH commerce.
Customer relationship and data
A traditional TikTok shopping link-out sends the shopper to your site, where you control the experience and collect first-party data. A one-click purchase inside TikTok keeps them in TikTok. TikTok has not said what customer data passes to brands under Buy Direct, so ask before assuming you will own the relationship.
Creators and catalogue must agree
The IAB research above suggests shoppers trust AI advice more when it reflects creator reviews. If a creator says a jacket runs small and your catalogue says true to size, the shopper sees a contradiction at the worst moment. Brief creators with accurate product facts, and update the catalogue when creators spot a problem. TikTok has also changed GMV Max to factor in affiliate commissions, coupons and referral fees, which makes the true cost of creator-led TikTok shopping sales easier to see.
Returns and impulse purchases
One-click TikTok shopping from an entertainment feed will raise conversion and, very likely, returns. Under UK distance-selling rules, most online purchases carry a 14-day cancellation right whatever the checkout looks like. Budget for it.
Attribution and measurement
With discovery, questions and payment all inside TikTok, TikTok shopping attribution looks simpler, but it also means relying on TikTok’s reporting. Our marketing services team helps brands set up independent measurement for social commerce.
Is TikTok Shopping's One-Click Checkout Coming to the UK?
TikTok has not said. The features were announced at Advertising Week New York, and the TikTok Ad Network expansion in the same post was explicitly for US advertisers.
What we know
TikTok Shop already operates in the UK, and UK consumers were part of the IAB research above, so the demand case exists. But Buy Direct depends on payment and commerce partnerships that need to be in place market by market, and TikTok gave no timetable for any of them.
What UK brands can do now
Get the product catalogue and FAQs into a state an AI assistant can use. Check whether your commerce platform has announced Buy Direct support. If you already sell through TikTok Shop UK, keep that TikTok shopping channel running; Buy Direct is an addition, not a replacement.
Compliance to keep in view
An AI assistant that misstates a price, a delivery time or a product feature on your behalf is still your problem under consumer protection law. The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 gave the Competition and Markets Authority power to fine firms directly for consumer law breaches, so accurate assistant answers are a compliance matter as much as a marketing one.
TikTok Shopping Checklist: Questions Before Switching On Buy Direct
When TikTok shopping tools reach your market, these questions will decide whether they are worth it.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What fee does TikTok take on a Buy Direct order? | Compare with TikTok Shop fees and your ad cost per sale |
| Which customer data do we receive? | Decides whether you can remarket, support and retain the buyer |
| What does the Shopping Assistant read from our catalogue? | You are responsible for what it tells customers |
| Can we review or correct assistant answers? | Errors at the point of sale cost refunds and trust |
| How are returns and refunds handled? | Impulse buying raises return rates |
| Does our commerce platform support it in our market? | Availability depends on partners such as Shopify and Stripe |
If the answers are good, the new TikTok shopping route could be the shortest path from a creator video to a sale that any platform offers. If they are vague, wait for the second wave. Our digital strategy team can help weigh it against your other channels.
