Gemini app for Windows downloads went live on 10 September 2026, and Google built the whole launch around two keys. Press Alt + Space on a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC and Gemini opens over whatever you are working on, ready for a fact-check, a draft or a quick question, then steps aside. Mac owners have had the same idea on Option + Space since 15 April. Windows users waited 148 days for it.
Google’s announcement is brief: three suggested uses, one sentence about performance and one about availability. So we read everything around it: the download page, Google’s Help Center pages for the Windows and Mac apps, the Gemini Spark support page and the UK plans page, plus Microsoft’s and OpenAI’s documentation for the very same shortcut. We also read the first hands-on reports from PCWorld, Thurrott, 9to5Google and Chrome Unboxed, which say more about the app than launch posts for new AI tools usually do.
Three findings shape everything below. Alt + Space was already spoken for on many Windows PCs, and Windows hands it to whichever app grabs it first. The Windows client arrives without the three native desktop features Google lists for the Mac. And Gemini Spark, the agent Google puts front and centre, is missing from its own support page’s list of supported apps, and is not offered to UK users at all.

What the Gemini App for Windows Does on Day One
The launch post, written by Erin Pettigrew, Director of Product Management for the Gemini app, describes a “lightweight and quiet” desktop client that “runs without slowing down your PC”. It is free to download, available globally for Windows 10 and 11, and signs in with the same Google Account you already use for Gemini on the web and on your phone. Google’s download page says chat history and memory sync across desktop, web and mobile.
The three uses Google leads with
Google frames the Gemini app for Windows around three jobs. The first is the shortcut: “Press Alt + Space on your PC at any time to open Gemini over your active work”, for tasks such as “a quick fact-check on a document or a few catchy title ideas for a presentation”. The second is a dedicated workspace where you can hand multi-step tasks to Gemini Spark, “your 24/7 personal AI agent”, or draft a project summary from Gmail and Google Drive. The third is creative work: images with Nano Banana and video with Gemini Omni.
A footnote attached to both Spark and Omni carries the fine print: “Google AI subscription required. Availability varies. 18+.” The post closes by calling the release “just the beginning for the Gemini app on Windows, with more native desktop capabilities rolling out over time.”
What you need to install it
The launch post gives no system requirements, but Google’s Help Center page for the Gemini app for Windows does. You need a PC running Windows 10 or later, 8 GB of RAM or more, at least 200 MB of free disk space and a stable internet connection. The download page adds that the Gemini app for Windows runs on both x64 and ARM64 hardware, so Arm-based Windows laptops are covered as well as Intel and AMD machines.
Installation is a conventional GeminiSetup.exe file from gemini.google/desktop. After that, the Gemini app for Windows lives in the Start menu, the taskbar and the system tray. Updates announce themselves with a notification in the bottom right corner and a Restart to update button.

Where to download it, and where not to
Download the Gemini app for Windows only from gemini.google/desktop, the address in Google’s own post and Help Center. That matters because launch day was messy. PCWorld noted that when its reviewer sat down to write, Google’s blog post “didn’t even include a link to download” the app.
A web search for a Gemini Windows client also surfaces an independent “GeminiDesktop” app. Its site says it is “Not affiliated with Google”, asks you to bring your own Gemini or OpenRouter key, and still claimed on launch day that Google does not offer an official native Windows app. A third-party wrapper may be perfectly legitimate, but it is not the product Google launched.
Alt + Space Is Crowded: Six Claimants and the Gemini App for Windows
Thurrott called Alt + Space “overused”, and the documentation backs that up. Before the Gemini app for Windows arrived, the combination already meant something to Windows itself and to at least four widely used apps, two of them from Microsoft and one from Google.
What Alt + Space did before any assistant
Long before AI assistants, Alt + Space opened the window menu: the small list with Move, Size, Minimise, Maximise and Close. Microsoft’s current keyboard shortcut reference still lists it as “Open the shortcut menu for the active window.” It is how keyboard users move or resize a stuck window without reaching for a mouse.
Who else claims the shortcut
The table lists every documented claimant we could verify, with the date each one’s use of Alt + Space was first documented.

How Windows decides which app wins
Windows does not referee these clashes in any clever way. When Microsoft gave Alt + Space to the Copilot app in December 2024, its Windows Insider post explained that Copilot uses a Windows function called RegisterHotKey, that “Many apps use this keyboard shortcut today”, and that “Windows will register whichever app is launched first on your PC and running in the background as the app that is invoked when using Alt + Space.” Microsoft’s developer documentation for RegisterHotKey adds that the call typically “fails if the keystrokes specified for the hot key have already been registered for another hot key”.
In practice that makes startup order the tie-breaker. OpenAI’s help page warns that ChatGPT’s companion window shortcut “will not work if it is already registered with another Windows application”. A PowerToys bug report filed in December 2025 describes the untidy version: with PowerToys Run and Copilot both on Alt + Space, only one of the two opens, whichever wins the race at that moment. Google’s launch post does not say how the Gemini app for Windows behaves when it loses that race.
Measured from each documented start date, Copilot’s quick view had used Alt + Space for more than four times as long as Google’s own search launcher had been generally available when the Gemini app for Windows arrived.
The Google-versus-Google collision
The oddest entry in that table is Google’s own. The Google app for desktop, Google’s search launcher for Windows, uses Alt + Space to open a floating box that searches “the web, Google Drive and local files, and installed apps”, in 9to5Google’s description. It graduated from Search Labs to a worldwide English release on 14 April 2026, the day before the Gemini app for Mac launched. Anyone who installs both Google apps on one PC now has two Google products reaching for the same keys, and Google’s Windows launch post does not mention it.
Gemini App for Windows vs the Mac App: Three Missing Features
The Gemini app for Windows is not a straight port of the Mac client, and Google’s download page says so. Its FAQ lists the native capabilities available “In the Gemini macOS app”: sharing screen context “by pressing both Command keys”, using your voice “to dictate clean text and edit content across open apps”, and connecting “local folders with Gemini Spark to organize and synthesize your files”. The next line reads: “More native capabilities will roll out to Windows over time.”
Three native capabilities that stay on the Mac for now
Each of those three is what makes a desktop assistant more than a browser tab. Window sharing gives Gemini the context of what you are looking at. Speak to Window, which Google’s Mac Help Center page says is English-only and still rolling out, lets you hold the fn key, talk, and have Gemini write or edit directly inside another app. Local folder access lets Spark read and tidy files on the machine.
At launch, the Gemini app for Windows lists none of the three. That fits 9to5Google’s description of the Windows window as “basically the website with a side panel to access Notebooks and Recents”. It is a fast doorway to Gemini on the web, not yet a client that understands the PC it runs on.
Shortcuts, requirements and updates compared
The two clients also differ in how you open them, what hardware they need and how they update.

The documentation gap in numbers
Google’s Help Center tells the same story in word counts. Its page for the Gemini app for Windows runs to 273 words before the related-resources links. The Mac page runs to 1,096 words, four times as long, because it has window sharing, voice modes and keyboard settings to explain.
Gemini Spark and the Gemini App for Windows: A Documentation Gap
Gemini Spark is the second of the three uses Google highlights for the Gemini app for Windows, and the one that most needs checking. Spark is Google’s agent for multi-step and scheduled work, introduced at Google I/O in May 2026. Its support page lists jobs such as decluttering an inbox, building a custom news digest and completing browsing tasks through Chrome.
What Google’s own Spark page says
Google’s Help Center page for Spark, as we read it on 11 September 2026, the day after the Windows launch, sets four requirements. You must “Be 18 or over”, sign in “with a personal Google Account”, because “this feature isn’t available if you sign in with a work or school Google Account”, “Have a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription” and “Have Keep Activity on”.
It then adds two limits that matter here. Spark is “Available wherever Gemini Apps are supported, except in the European Economic Area, Nigeria, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom”. And it is “Only available in the Gemini mobile app, the Gemini app on Mac, and the Gemini web app at gemini.google.com”.
The Gemini app for Windows is not on that list. Support pages often trail launches by a few days, so this may simply be documentation catching up. Until the page changes, though, the only written promise of Spark on Windows is a launch post whose footnote says “Availability varies”.
What PCWorld saw
PCWorld’s hands-on is consistent with that gap. Its reviewer said of Spark: “I didn’t see it in the app, either as a feature or even a potential upsell”, while noting that they were not paying for the plan that unlocks it. The Settings menu pointed to Scheduled Actions instead, with suggestions such as sending a recipe every weekend.

Run a typical UK employee through Google’s conditions and the answer arrives quickly: two of the six fail outright, whatever plan you buy.

What the Gemini App for Windows Costs, and Who Gets Which Parts
The Gemini app for Windows itself costs nothing. What you can do inside it depends on your plan, your age and your country, and the download page’s fine print says as much: “Selected features available with Google AI subscription to users 18+.”
The plans behind the features
Google’s UK plans page lists four tiers. Free includes Gemini with access to 3.6 Flash, varying access to 3.1 Pro, image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas and Gems. Google AI Plus, at £4.49 a month, doubles Free usage limits and adds video generation. Google AI Pro, at £18.99, offers four times the Free limits. Google AI Ultra starts at £79.99 a month for five times Pro’s limits, or £189.99 for twenty times, plus “first access to advanced features like Deep Think and Gemini Spark (in selected countries)”. The US equivalents are $4.99, $19.99, $99.99 and $199.99.

The annual cost for one UK user
Multiplied out at Google’s UK list prices, a year of Google AI Pro costs £227.88 per person, and in the UK none of that buys Spark.
Work and school accounts
Business users face a different gate. The Help Center says the Gemini app for Windows works with “a work or school Google Account with access to Gemini turned on by your administrator”. For a Google Workspace organisation, whether staff can sign in at all is an admin decision, and Spark stays off for work accounts regardless of plan.
How to Change the Gemini App for Windows Shortcut
Google’s download page labels Alt + Space a “Customizable shortcut” and says “You can customize your shortcut keys anytime in the Gemini app settings.” Thurrott, who installed the app on launch day, reports that “you can also choose between other preset keyboard shortcuts or create your own custom keyboard shortcut”.
Option one: give Gemini a different combination
If you already rely on PowerToys Run, Copilot’s quick view or ChatGPT’s companion window, the least disruptive fix is to move the Gemini app for Windows to a combination nothing else uses. Pick one with two modifier keys so it is unlikely to collide with shortcuts inside Office apps or browsers. Then restart and test, because startup order is what settles a tie.
Option two: move the other app instead
Every other claimant can move too. Microsoft’s PowerToys documentation says the Run shortcut “can be changed in the settings window”, and the newer PowerToys Command Palette already defaults to Win + Alt + Space. ChatGPT’s shortcut lives under Settings, App, Companion window hotkey. Windows Latest reported in January 2025 that the Copilot app’s settings include an “Enable Alt+Space shortcut” option you can switch off.
Option three: give Alt + Space back to Windows
If you still use Alt + Space the original way, to move or resize windows from the keyboard, the only reliable fix is to take it away from every app. That means changing the Gemini app for Windows shortcut and checking each of the other claimants in the table above.
A two-minute clash test
Run this once on any PC where more than one assistant is installed:
- Restart the PC so every app registers its shortcut in normal startup order.
- Press Alt + Space on the desktop and note which app opens.
- Open a document, press it again and confirm the same app answers.
- Move every app that should not own Alt + Space to its own combination.
- Restart and repeat the test before you call it fixed.
First Hands-On Verdicts: A Useful Shortcut on a Thin App
The first reviews split along a clear line. Everyone likes the shortcut. Opinions on the app behind it range from “the full Gemini experience” to “probably a waste of your time”.
PCWorld: “It wasted my time”
PCWorld went furthest. Without signing in, the app is a basic chatbot; signing in unlocks stored chats, tabs for images and video and a media library, and connecting Workspace adds a daily brief. But asked to delete Gmail Social-tab messages older than 60 days, Gemini replied that it was “unable to permanently delete them”. Asked for the largest file in Google Drive, it said it had no “direct visibility into file metadata like exact storage size”. A video request “apparently vanished” after the reviewer navigated away from the tab. The conclusion: “for now, the Gemini app for Windows is probably a waste of your time.”
Thurrott, 9to5Google and Chrome Unboxed
Thurrott describes “the full Gemini experience, with a sidebar that lets you access your chat history, Daily brief, image and video creation capabilities, your document and media libraries, notebooks, and recent creations”, and notes that Omni video requires a Google AI subscription. 9to5Google calls the window “basically the website with a side panel”. Chrome Unboxed was the warmest, calling instant summoning the standout feature, and said it would watch “how quickly advanced screen-reasoning features make their way across from macOS”.

Where the reviews agree
Every report praises the one thing Windows gains over the browser: a keystroke that puts Gemini on top of the current app. None found a Windows-only capability beyond that. Google’s own documentation says the same thing more politely: the value of the Gemini app for Windows today is speed of access, not deeper integration with the PC.
Gemini App for Windows vs ChatGPT and Copilot on the Same PC
The Gemini app for Windows lands on desktops where two rivals already had native clients. Microsoft’s Copilot app gained its Alt + Space quick view in a December 2024 update for Windows Insiders, and OpenAI’s ChatGPT Windows app has its own Alt + Space companion window. PCWorld argued that “Competing options, like ChatGPT’s Windows app, allow you to connect the agent to your desktop or services like Slack”, adding: “Gemini can’t even do that.”
What each quick window is for
OpenAI says the ChatGPT companion window lets you “instantly ask ChatGPT anything, upload files, generate a new image, or start a new conversation”. Microsoft’s quick view is a movable, resizable Copilot window you can open and close with the same keys. Google’s pitch for the Gemini app for Windows leans on its own ecosystem: answers over your active work, plus context pulled from Gmail and Drive, which is also where PCWorld found its limits.
Picking one default, not three
For most people the practical question is not which assistant is best but which one earns the Alt + Space slot. If your work lives in Gmail, Drive and Docs, the Gemini app for Windows is the natural holder, because it can reach those apps. If your organisation runs on Microsoft 365, Microsoft’s assistant is the closer fit. Give the winner Alt + Space, move the others to different combinations, and take the rest out of startup if nobody uses them.
Rolling Out the Gemini App for Windows at Work
For IT teams, the launch raises admin questions before productivity ones. None are hard, and all are easier to answer before staff start running GeminiSetup.exe on their own.
Decide whether work accounts can sign in
The Help Center is explicit that work and school accounts need “access to Gemini turned on by your administrator”, the same Gemini access that governs the web app. Check that setting first. At launch we found no admin guidance specific to the Windows client among the latest posts on Google’s Workspace Updates blog, which already covers controls for Gemini Notebook and custom MCP server connections in Gemini Business.
Treat the shortcut as a device setting
Shortcut clashes generate support tickets. If your fleet already runs PowerToys or the Copilot app, decide which tool owns Alt + Space, write it down, and add it to your device management baseline so every new laptop behaves the same way. Your service desk will appreciate a one-line answer to “why does Alt + Space open the wrong thing?”
Mind the Windows 10 question
Google supports Windows 10, but Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on 14 October 2025. Its consumer Extended Security Updates programme now protects enrolled Windows 10 devices until 12 October 2027, and enrolment is free if you sync your PC settings, costs 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or is a one-time US$30 purchase. A new desktop AI client is a reason to check your Windows 10 estate, not a reason to keep an unsupported PC in service longer.
Plan for a second Google updater
If you already manage Chrome versions across a fleet, as we covered in our look at Chrome Extended Stable, the Gemini app for Windows adds another Google client with its own update prompt. The Help Center says updates arrive as a notification with a Restart to update button, so decide how that fits your patching window.
A five-point rollout checklist
Before you allow the Gemini app for Windows on company PCs:
- Confirm Gemini access for Workspace accounts in the Admin console.
- Decide which assistant owns Alt + Space on managed PCs.
- Tell UK staff that Spark is not available to them, whatever the launch post suggests.
- Set a policy on connecting Gmail and Drive to Gemini.
- Point every download to gemini.google/desktop and nowhere else.

What Comes Next for the Gemini App for Windows
Google calls the release “just the beginning”, and the Mac client shows what “more native desktop capabilities” could mean. It already offers window sharing, Speak to Window dictation and local folder access for Spark. Leaks point further still. TestingCatalog reported on 7 September 2026 that Google is internally testing Projects for the Gemini desktop app, grouping custom instructions, files and related chats in dedicated workspaces.
The desktop roadmap so far
This site has tracked the desktop client since the first leaks: MCP support and media generation tabs, then avatars and a hidden Customize tab, then Obsidian integration and Finder support in closed Mac builds. Each of those features appeared on the Mac first. Nothing Google has published says when, or whether, any will reach the Gemini app for Windows.
Features to watch for on Windows
The gaps worth tracking are the ones Google has already built elsewhere:
- Screen context sharing, which the Mac app offered from its first release.
- Voice dictation into other apps, currently English-only on the Mac.
- Spark named for Windows on its support page, plus local folder access.
- A Projects view, if the internal test ships.
What would change the verdict
If Google adds window sharing and documents Spark for Windows, the Gemini app for Windows becomes a genuine desktop agent rather than a fast way to open a website. Until then, the shortcut is the reason to install it, and choosing who owns that shortcut is the first job.
