Voyager AI is a new desktop app that lets an AI agent do creative production work on your Mac: editing video, building motion graphics, composing music and assembling 3D scenes inside the apps creators already use. It launched on Thursday 8 October 2026, runs on Apple Silicon Macs, and works with frontier models such as Anthropic’s Claude Opus as well as cheaper open-weight models, according to TestingCatalog’s launch-day post.

Its makers call it “the open harness for creative work”. Co-founder Anvisha Pai put it more bluntly in her launch thread on X: “The Codex for creative work. Most AI tools are built for coding. Voyager is designed to get the best creative results from models like Opus, Astra and DeepSeek.” The thread passed 400,000 views within hours.

This article explains what Voyager AI is, how it controls apps such as After Effects, DaVinci Resolve, Blender and Ableton, which models it supports, what its plans and credits really buy, and what to check on privacy and rights before a team adopts it. For the wider picture of agent tools on the desktop, see our AI models and tools hub.

What Voyager AI Is and Who Built It

Voyager AI is a desktop app in which an AI agent does the hands-on production steps of creative work. You describe the outcome and give feedback; the agent picks the tools and does the steps. The official Voyager FAQ says it “drives the creative apps you already have”, generates images, video, voice and music with current models, and “edits the results into finished work”.

The key word is harness. The FAQ defines an agent harness as “the software around an AI model that gives it tools, files, memory and a place to work”. Claude Code and Codex are harnesses for writing code. Voyager AI is pitched as the equivalent for video, design, motion and sound.

The team behind Voyager AI

Voyager is made by Nullframe, Inc., the company behind the design tool Moda. Pai said in her thread that Moda “is a design tool loved by 100k+ people” and that the company has raised $16 million from Y Combinator, General Catalyst and Pear VC, plus founders and executives from Dropbox, Segment, Stripe and Scale AI. Her co-founder Ravi Parikh, a music producer, led much of the audio work.

How Voyager AI Works on a Mac

The pitch is that creative work rarely happens in one app. A product video might need footage cut in Resolve, titles built in After Effects, a soundtrack in a music tool and a still for social media in Photoshop. Pai described the problem in a reply to a user: “so many creative workflows are multimodal and require coordinating a zillion tools. we’re trying to simplify that 100x”.

TestingCatalog summarised the result in a companion post: Voyager AI “reads project files, operates creative apps, and outputs editable results”. That last part matters to professionals. The agent’s work stays in normal project files you can open and change by hand.

Driving the apps you already own

The FAQ says the agent controls apps “through each app’s own scripting wherever it can”: Photoshop scripting, a local bridge for Premiere Pro, scripts for After Effects and Illustrator, and Resolve’s scripting API. For controls an app does not expose, it “can operate the app window directly, within the macOS permissions you grant”. Live control of the Adobe apps currently runs on macOS only.

Beyond the core list, Voyager AI’s skills also cover Cinema 4D, Houdini, REAPER, Descript, OBS, Kdenlive and Shotcut, plus code-based motion tools such as Remotion and Manim. You need your own licence for any paid app.

Built-in engines that cost nothing

If you do not own Adobe or Ableton software, Voyager AI ships three engines of its own, free with the app. They run on your machine, with “no watermark and no project limits”.

  • Voyager Design handles vector, raster and paint layers, layouts, PowerPoint decks and keyframed motion graphics, exporting PNG, SVG, PDF, PSD, Lottie and ProRes 4444 with alpha.
  • Voyager Video offers a timeline, multicam, colour and keying, and hands projects to Resolve or Premiere as OTIO, FCPXML or EDL.
  • Voyager DAW covers arranging, instruments, VST3 plug-ins, mixing and mastering, and scoring to picture by cutting cues to a video’s edits.

Music without a music model

One of the more striking launch demos involved no generative audio model at all. Pai posted a clip of “Opus 5.5 composing a track in the Voyager harness with our built-in music tool. No generative models were used.” Parikh added that watching “Claude using Voyager to make music, like actually write every midi track, do the sound design, mix things together” was “mindblowing”. In other words, a language model wrote and arranged the notes in the DAW, the way a human producer would.

The Models Behind Voyager AI: Claude Opus to Open Weights

Voyager AI separates the agent, which plans and operates the apps, from the generation models that make images, video and sound. That split explains the headline. Claude Opus and the open-weight models are agent options; models such as Veo and Seedance are generation options.

Bring your own Claude or ChatGPT subscription

The cheapest route is your existing subscription. The FAQ says you can connect “Claude, Codex (with your ChatGPT sign-in), Voyager’s own agent or API models”, that “Claude and Codex run on their official runtimes with your existing sign-ins”, and that “Voyager never bills your Claude or ChatGPT subscription”. Pai’s thread said this lets people “use it completely for free”.

The agent models in Voyager AI’s paid plans

If you would rather pay Voyager AI, its plans include a set of agent models billed in credits. The default on every plan is DeepSeek V4.1 Flash. The table lists each model’s approximate cost per agent turn from the Voyager pricing page, where one credit equals one US cent of provider cost.

What “open-weight” means in Voyager AI

The home page says Voyager AI is tuned so that frontier models “and open models can work with creative tools more effectively”. The cheap defaults come from DeepSeek and Zhipu’s GLM family, labs known for publishing model weights. Nothing in Voyager’s documentation says these models run locally on your Mac, though. They are billed in credits per turn, which means they run on a provider’s servers. “Apple Silicon” describes the app’s requirement, not local inference.

Generation models for images, video and voice

For media, Voyager AI picks a generation model per step unless you name one. The FAQ lists Veo 3.1, Seedance, Kling 3.0, MiniMax H3, Wan, LTX, Nano Banana, GPT Image 2.0, FLUX.2, Seedream, Recraft and ElevenLabs. You can add your own keys for fal, Google, ElevenLabs or Higgsfield, or sign in with Higgsfield to spend that plan’s credits, and the provider then bills you directly.

Voyager AI Pricing and Credits Explained

Voyager AI is free to download and use with your own agent and model keys. Paid plans add generation with every model on one bill, cloud rendering and more parallel jobs. Credits are charged “exactly what the model provider charges”, with no markup. Monthly credits reset each month, and extra packs cost 1.1 cents a credit, are prepaid and last 12 months.

The four paid plans

PlanPrice per seat a monthCredits a month (first 3 months)Parallel generationsCloud render GPUs per job
Starter$191,500 (2,250)61
Creator$494,700 (7,050)12Up to 2
Ultra$14914,400 (21,600)24Up to 4, with priority
GigaMax$50052,000 (67,000)36Up to 4, with priority

Annual billing takes 15% off, so Creator falls to $41.65 a month. A Team plan with shared projects is “coming soon”, and an Enterprise plan with SSO and admin spend controls is available on request.

What Claude Opus costs inside a Voyager AI plan

The credit table hides a big spread. Ultra’s 14,400 monthly credits buy roughly 2,050 agent turns on DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, the figure Voyager itself quotes. The same credits buy only about 37 turns on Claude Opus 5.5 at 390 credits each. The chart shows the arithmetic for each model at Ultra’s standard allowance.

Agent turns bought by Ultra’s 14,400 monthly credits (DeepSeek = 100%)
DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, 7 credits a turn about 2,050
GPT-6.1 Sol, 140 credits a turn about 103
Claude Sonnet 5.5, 230 credits a turn about 63
Claude Opus 5.5, 390 credits a turn about 37
Claude Fable 5.1, 890 credits a turn about 16

The lesson is simple. If you want Claude Opus as the agent in Voyager AI, connect your own Claude subscription rather than spending plan credits on it, and keep the credits for video and image generation. For context on how Anthropic prices its newest mid-tier model, see our report on Claude Sonnet 5.5.

What generation costs

Voyager AI gives concrete examples. An eight-second MiniMax H3 clip with audio costs 48 credits, or 48 cents, and an eight-second Seedance 2.5 clip about 277 credits. On that basis, Starter’s 1,500 monthly credits buy about 58 short MiniMax H3 Max Turbo clips or about 375 images, by Voyager’s own estimates.

The “$1,588 saved” claim

The pricing page says the free engines are “worth $1,588 in year one elsewhere”: an annual Adobe Creative Cloud Pro plan at $839.88 plus a one-time Ableton Live 12 Suite licence at $749. Voyager AI is careful to say it “offers comparable editing capabilities, not the same software”, and that its DAW lacks sampled orchestral instruments for now. Treat the figure as marketing, not a like-for-like comparison.

Claude Code, Codex and the Voyager AI Plugin

voyager ai apple silicon claude opus open weight models f plaster cube sphere cone and cylinder

Developers do not have to use the Voyager window at all. TestingCatalog noted that “the download also bundles a plugin for Codex and Claude, plus a standalone creative CLI”. The FAQ confirms that after installing the plugin, “the same creative skills and command-line tools work inside Claude Code or Codex”.

There is one limit. Generation and editing run without the desktop window, but “screen recording and computer control use the Voyager desktop app on a Mac”. So a fully headless pipeline can generate and edit, but cannot drive Photoshop’s interface.

Skills, memory and MCP servers

Voyager AI ships about 40 skills, each a set of instructions and tools for one job, such as editing in Premiere Pro or recording a voiceover. You can save your own, and the app “also finds the skills you installed for Claude Code, Codex or Cursor”. A memory feature “learns how each user works”.

It also supports Model Context Protocol servers, added with an HTTPS URL, a browser sign-in, a bearer token or a local command, and switched on for all projects or only some. For services without one, the FAQ says Voyager AI can build a connector from the service’s API documentation. Teams already automating content pipelines can plug it into existing workflow automation.

Voyager AI Requirements and Platform Support

The “for Apple Silicon” in the headline is a hard requirement on the Mac. The FAQ lists “a Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later) on macOS 15 or later; Intel Macs are not supported yet”. Windows 11 (x64) and Linux (x64, as AppImage or .deb) builds are in alpha, with a Windows general release “coming very soon” and mobile apps planned.

What the Windows alpha lacks

The Windows installer is not yet signed, so SmartScreen may warn on install. Some built-in creative tools are off by default on Windows, live control of the Adobe apps is macOS-only, and Windows Smart App Control can block parts of the app. For now, the Mac is the platform Voyager AI is built for.

Updates and downloads

On Mac and Windows, updates download automatically and install on restart. The Linux alpha has no in-app updates yet. The company publishes builds through a public GitHub releases repository, created on 18 September and updated on launch day.

Privacy, Ownership and Rights in Voyager AI

An agent that can open your project files and operate your apps needs careful setup. Voyager AI’s answers are reasonable, but each one leaves decisions to you.

What leaves your Mac

The FAQ says projects, conversations and generated files “stay on your computer”, and installing the app uploads nothing by itself. But “when a task needs a model, the agent sends that provider the files and context the task uses, so review what the agent can reach”. The desktop app also reports usage statistics linked to your account by default, which you can switch off in Settings under Privacy.

From a cybersecurity point of view, the computer-control permission deserves the most thought. Granting an agent screen recording and accessibility rights on macOS lets it see and click anything on screen. Use a dedicated user account or machine for client work, and keep sensitive files outside the folders the agent can reach. UK firms handling client footage should check the data protection implications of sending frames to third-party model providers.

Who owns the output

Between you and Nullframe, you own what Voyager AI generates for you and keep your rights in what you bring. Model providers’ own terms still apply, and “someone else may get a similar result from a similar prompt”. Voyager adds no watermark, though some providers add provenance labels, which the terms ask you to keep.

Real people and likeness

Generating videos of real people’s faces through Voyager-managed models needs an Ultra or GigaMax plan, separate written approval from the company and “the person’s express, informed permission”. That is a stricter rule than many generator apps apply, and agencies should build the consent step into their briefs.

Is Voyager AI Right for Your Team?

Voyager AI is aimed at “creators, editors, motion designers, marketers and small studios”. During the beta, Pai said, users included AI filmmakers making commercials, YC founders making launch videos, marketers running their X feeds and people compiling GoPro footage into videos.

Voyager publishes its own comparison with Higgsfield, which makes the same argument at length: a generator gives you clips, while Voyager AI gives an agent the whole production and keeps the project editable.

Where Voyager AI fits well

  • Small marketing teams producing short social videos, product clips and launch videos every week.
  • Editors and motion designers who want an assistant to handle repetitive steps in Resolve, Premiere or After Effects.
  • Founders without design staff who already pay for Claude or ChatGPT and can therefore start free.

Where to be careful

  • “Open harness” does not mean open source. The FAQ says plainly that the app “is proprietary software from Nullframe”.
  • It is new. Computer control of creative apps is, in Pai’s words, “still really nascent”, so expect rough edges.
  • Plan credits drain quickly on frontier agent models, as the chart above shows.
