Airbnb social features took their biggest step yet on 30 September 2026. In its fall product update, Airbnb added Connect, which lets you link up with family, friends and people you have travelled with, and a Travel Map that shows where your connections have stayed and where they are going next. Once you connect with someone, in Airbnb’s words, “you can see their trips, and they can see yours”.

The same update brought AI search, which we covered in detail in our report on Airbnb’s AI search and fall update. This article focuses on the social half. It traces how Airbnb has built towards a social network in steps since 2024, explains why the company wants one, sets out exactly what your connections can see, and gives a practical guide to the privacy settings and safety risks.

That matters because these Airbnb social features share something sensitive: where you will be, and when you will not be at home. TechCrunch, which broke the story, says the features are designed to “nudge people to take more trips and book additional experiences”. Before you start connecting, it is worth knowing what you are sharing.

What the New Airbnb Social Features Do

Airbnb’s newsroom post groups the social changes under the heading “Discover where to go from people you know”. There are four parts to the new Airbnb social features.

Connect

You can invite people you know to connect on Airbnb. Once connected, both of you can see each other’s trips. Airbnb will also suggest connections based on your past trips, which means people you once shared a booking or an experience with may be prompted to connect with you.

Travel Map

The Travel Map shows where your connections have travelled or are going on an interactive map. You can see where they stayed and “any experiences or services they booked”. You can read their reviews, save their favourites to your wishlist and message them in the app. Airbnb says the map “fills as you add more connections”.

Privacy controls

Airbnb says you can “decide which trips appear on your travel map and how much of each trip you share”, and that you can hide or remove a trip or block a connection at any time.

Neighbourhood pages

Tapping the map opens an overview of an area, built “from what guests and hosts tell us and from other sources”, covering what it is like, things to do, where to eat and how to get around, plus top experiences from local hosts. According to a footnote in Airbnb’s announcement, the pages start in Paris.

Who can use it

Airbnb’s announcement presents Connect and the Travel Map as available “starting today”, and unlike the AI search features, which start in the US, it does not limit them to one country. The neighbourhood pages are narrower and begin in Paris. As with most app releases, the Airbnb social features may reach users gradually, so not everyone will see them on the first day; updating the app is the first step.

The fall update is not a sudden pivot. It is the latest of several moves that have gradually turned Airbnb accounts into social profiles.

2024: profiles people actually filled in

In 2024 Airbnb redesigned its profile page so guests could say more about themselves, including where they live and which languages they speak. In May 2025, Airbnb’s vice-president of product marketing, Judson Coplan, told TechCrunch that completed profiles rose 15-fold after that release. “For us, that was a clue that travel is something about connections,” he said.

May 2025: the social plan

When Airbnb relaunched Experiences and introduced Services in May 2025, it said social features would follow later that year. The plan was a group chat for people who had taken part in an experience together, so they could share photos and recommendations. Airbnb said it was developing privacy features around those connections.

October 2025: connections from experiences

In October 2025 the first Airbnb social features arrived. When you booked an experience, you could see the names of other guests and where they were from. Afterwards you could send a message request, exchange photos and add each other to a new Connections tab on your profile.

September 2026: from people you met to people you know

The fall update widens the circle from strangers met on an experience to family and friends, and from one shared activity to your whole travel history. That is the step that turns a feature into something closer to a social network.

Days between Airbnb’s social launches (our calendar arithmetic: 13 May 2025 to 21 Oct 2025 = 161; 21 Oct 2025 to 30 Sep 2026 = 344; 161 + 344 = 505)

Why Airbnb Wants Social Features

Airbnb is a booking platform, not a social network, so it is fair to ask why it is building Airbnb social features at all. The reporting points to three commercial reasons.

Turning visits into bookings

On its first-quarter 2025 call, chief executive Brian Chesky said Airbnb was accessed by more than 1.5 billion devices in a year, but that many visitors do not book a home. Airbnb social features give those visitors a reason to come back: a friend’s trip, a recommendation or a place someone they trust enjoyed.

Recommendations people trust

Airbnb’s own framing is that “some of the best recommendations come from people you trust”. A review from a stranger is useful; a stay recommended by a friend is persuasive. The Travel Map turns your contacts’ booking history into a source of ideas, with a one-tap route to save their homes to your wishlist.

Selling experiences and services

The social layer also supports Airbnb’s newer businesses. When Experiences and Services relaunched, TechCrunch reported that Airbnb takes a 15% cut from services and a 20% cut from experiences. Seeing which food tours or workshops your friends booked is a natural prompt to book the same, and TechCrunch says the features are designed to encourage exactly that.

Services, such as chefs, massages and photography: 15
Experiences, such as tours, classes and workshops: 20

Data that could sharpen recommendations

The same update launched AI search, and the two halves fit together. A Travel Map full of trips taken by people you trust is exactly the kind of signal a recommendation system values. Airbnb has not said that it uses connections’ trips to rank AI search results, and users should not assume it does. But if Airbnb social features are adopted widely, the company will hold a uniquely rich picture of who travels where, with whom, and what they liked, and how that data is used will deserve scrutiny.

Competing beyond accommodation

Experiences and Services put Airbnb in competition with Tripadvisor, Booking.com, Viator and GetYourGuide, and with local service providers. A social graph is something those rivals do not have at the same depth, because Airbnb holds verified records of where people actually stayed.

What Your Connections Can See With Airbnb Social Features

This is the most important question for users, and Airbnb’s announcement answers most of it. Here is what the new Airbnb social features expose to a connection, based on the company’s description.

Upcoming trips are the sensitive part

Past trips are a record. Upcoming trips are a schedule. A Travel Map that shows “where they’re going next” also shows, by implication, when someone will be away from home and where they will be staying. That is useful between close friends and risky with anyone else.

Suggested connections widen the circle

Because Airbnb suggests connections based on past trips, the people you are prompted to connect with may include former housemates, ex-partners, colleagues from a work trip or strangers from a group experience. Accepting a suggestion should be a deliberate choice, not a reflex.

The default is still an open question

The announcement says you can decide which trips appear, but it does not say whether trips are shared or hidden by default when you connect. When Airbnb launched experience connections in 2025, dismissing the sharing prompt defaulted to “don’t share”. Until Airbnb confirms how Connect behaves, assume nothing and check each trip.

A Privacy Guide to Airbnb Social Features

You do not have to use Connect at all. If you do, a few habits keep the Airbnb social features useful without oversharing.

Before you connect

Review your trip list first and hide anything you would not want a new connection to see, especially upcoming stays. Then connect only with people you would happily tell your travel plans to in person. The feature works best as a circle of close friends and family rather than an address book.

Hide upcoming trips by default

The safest pattern is to hide future trips and reveal past ones. You still get recommendations from the Travel Map, and you can share a plan deliberately with the people travelling with you, without advertising when your home will be empty.

Share less of each trip

Airbnb lets you choose “how much of each trip you share”. If you want friends to know you visited Lisbon but not which flat you stayed in, or which experiences you booked, limit the detail rather than hiding the trip entirely.

Remove and block when circumstances change

Relationships change. Airbnb says you can remove a trip or block a connection at any time. Review your connections after a break-up, a job change or a falling-out, and remove anyone who should no longer see your plans.

Secure the account itself

Privacy settings only help if the account is safe. Once you have connections, a compromised Airbnb account exposes their trips as well as yours. Basic cybersecurity applies: use a unique password, turn on two-step verification and be wary of messages that ask you to log in through a link. Airbnb social features make an account more valuable to an attacker, so it is worth five minutes to lock it down.

Think about work travel

If you book business trips through a personal Airbnb account, your connections may see client locations or travel patterns that your employer considers confidential. Hide work trips, or keep work bookings in a separate account if your company allows it.

Safety Risks of Airbnb Social Features

Most people will use Airbnb social features with friends and family, and most of the time that will be harmless. But location sharing has well-known failure modes, and they apply here.

An empty home

Sharing upcoming trips publicly, even with a wide circle, tells people when you will be away. Police forces routinely advise against announcing holidays on social media for this reason. The same caution applies to a Travel Map visible to dozens of connections.

Unwanted contact

Connections can message you in the app. TechCrunch noted when the first Airbnb social features launched in 2025 that the company “will have to deal with the moderation issues that any chat-based social platform faces”. Airbnb says users can block and report others, and that its community team reviews reports.

Coercive control and stalking

Location-sharing tools can be misused by controlling partners or former partners. Anyone in that situation should review connections and trip visibility carefully, and consider not using Connect at all. Charities that support survivors of domestic abuse generally advise checking every app that shares location.

Children and family trips

Airbnb accounts are for adults, but family trips involve children. A Travel Map that shows a family’s holidays reveals where children will be, and when, to everyone the parents are connected with. Parents who use Airbnb social features should be especially selective about upcoming family trips, and should think twice before accepting connection suggestions from people they met briefly on a group experience.

Hosts are part of the picture

The Travel Map shows the homes your connections stayed in. That is already public in the sense that listings are public, but it links a named person to a specific home on specific dates. Hosts may want to know how their listings appear in connections’ maps, and Airbnb has not yet explained that in detail.

How Airbnb Social Features Compare With Other Apps

Sharing where you go is not new. What is different about Airbnb social features is the kind of data involved: verified bookings with dates, rather than posts you choose to make.

ServiceWhat it sharesHow sharing happens
Facebook and InstagramLocation tags and check-insPost by post, when you choose
Live location sharing appsWhere you are nowContinuous, with chosen people
Fitness apps such as StravaRoutes you ran or cycledPer activity, with privacy zones
Airbnb Connect and Travel MapPast and upcoming stays, bookings and reviewsGenerated from your bookings, with trip-level controls

Posts versus records

On Instagram or Facebook, nothing is shared until you post it. Airbnb social features work the other way round: the trips already exist as records, and the controls decide which of them connections can see. That makes defaults and reviews of your trip list far more important.

A lesson from fitness apps

In January 2018, Strava’s global heatmap of users’ activity was found to reveal the layouts of military bases, because soldiers’ runs traced their perimeters. No single user meant to disclose anything; the pattern emerged from aggregated, routine sharing. The lesson for Airbnb social features is that innocuous individual trips can add up to sensitive patterns, such as a regular work destination or a family’s school-holiday habits.

Future plans are the difference

Most location sharing is about the present or the past. Airbnb’s Travel Map also covers the future, because it shows where connections are going next. That is what makes it useful for planning and, at the same time, the part of the Airbnb social features that most deserves caution.

Airbnb Social Features and UK Data Protection

The new Airbnb social features roll out with Airbnb’s fall update; the AI search features start in the US, while the announcement does not limit Connect to any one country. For UK and European users, data protection law shapes how the features should behave.

Data protection by default

Article 25 of the UK GDPR requires organisations to build in data protection “by design and by default”. In practice, regulators expect sharing of personal data, especially location data, to be off unless the user turns it on. Whether Connect shares trips by default will matter for how it is judged in the UK and the EU.

Transparency about suggestions

Suggesting connections based on past trips means processing data about who travelled with whom. Users should be able to see why a suggestion was made and opt out of being suggested to others. Airbnb’s privacy policy and settings will need to explain this clearly.

What to do if something goes wrong

If you believe Airbnb has shared your data in a way you did not agree to, you can ask it for a copy of your data and how it was used, request deletion, and complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office in the UK. Keep screenshots of your settings if you raise a complaint.

Other platforms show the trend

Airbnb is not alone in turning accounts into public profiles. OpenAI has just added public profiles to ChatGPT, as our report on ChatGPT profiles explains. The common thread is that services which once held private records are adding social layers on top, and users need to check defaults each time.
