Airbnb AI search is now live for guests in the United States, the headline change in a fall update the company announced on 30 September 2026. Guests can describe a trip in their own words or by voice, type keywords into filters, read AI-written summaries of each home and compare wishlist homes side by side. The same update adds a social layer, letting you connect with family and friends and see their trips on a map. It also brings a batch of new services, from meal delivery to baby gear and laundry.
The Airbnb AI search launch is cautious by design. Chief executive Brian Chesky told TechCrunch that this is “our first foray into AI search” and that “it’s not hard to create AI search; it’s hard to create AI search in e-commerce when you have $100 billion going through your platform”. His concern is conversion: “Anyone can vibe-code a search function, but to do something that doesn’t kill conversion rate, that’s the hard part.”
This article explains what Airbnb AI search does, how it answers Chesky’s own criticism of chatbots, what the Connect and Travel Map features share, what the new services and host tools include, and why the timing matters as AI agents start booking trips. What Airbnb AI Search Does
The Airbnb newsroom post lists five AI features for guests, all “starting in the US”. TechCrunch describes the search as a toggle you switch on, sitting alongside the classic search rather than replacing it.
Search in your own words
The new search bar lets you search “across homes, experiences, and services using your own words or voice”. Instead of setting dates, guests and filters one by one, you can describe what you want. Heise reports that the classic search remains available, so guests who prefer the old approach can keep using it.
Filters that understand keywords
AI filters let you type a keyword and see the matching filters. Airbnb’s example: typing “baby” surfaces filters such as cribs, playgrounds, or children’s books and toys. It is a small change with a practical point, since Airbnb has hundreds of amenity filters that most guests never scroll through.
Descriptions and comparisons
Search results now include AI-written descriptions that “highlight key features of a home”. Homes on your wishlist can be compared in a new side-by-side view with AI summaries of their key features. Airbnb’s second-quarter letter had promised these comparisons “later this year”, and they arrive with this update.
Support in more than 50 languages
AI chat support is now available in more than 50 languages, and Airbnb is expanding to voice so guests can get answers by phone. Heise reports the voice option is for the US.
| Feature | What it does | Where |
|---|---|---|
| AI search | Search homes, experiences and services by text or voice | US first |
| AI filters | Type a keyword to find matching filters | US first |
| AI listing descriptions | Summaries of key features in search results | US first |
| AI comparison | Side-by-side view of wishlist homes | US first |
| AI customer support | Chat in 50+ languages; voice coming | Chat widely; voice in the US |
Why Airbnb AI Search Avoids the Chatbot Model
Airbnb is one of the few large consumer platforms that has refused to build a chat-first assistant. The reasons were set out by Chesky himself in May, and they explain the shape of this launch.
Chesky’s four problems with chatbots
On the first-quarter earnings call, Chesky said: “The design of a chatbot, as currently constructed, does not work for travel or e-commerce.” He named four problems: “too much text (most of e-commerce is photo-forward); no direct manipulation (you have to type everything rather than adjust sliders); poor comparison (you can get lost trying to compare thousands of options in a thread); and most bookings are multiplayer, while chatbots are primarily single-player, and not map-native.”
How the fall update answers them
Each feature in the update maps onto one of those complaints. Airbnb AI search keeps photo-led results rather than a wall of text. AI filters turn a typed word into filters you can then adjust. The comparison view addresses the “thread” problem directly. And the Connect and Travel Map features make trip planning social and map-based. Read this way, the fall update is Chesky’s critique turned into a product plan.
| Chesky’s chatbot problem (May 2026) | Fall update answer |
|---|---|
| Too much text; e-commerce is photo-forward | AI search returns normal photo listings with short AI descriptions |
| No direct manipulation | AI filters turn a keyword into filters you can toggle |
| Poor comparison in a thread | Side-by-side comparison of wishlist homes |
| Bookings are multiplayer; chatbots are single-player | Connect lets friends and family share trips |
| Chatbots are not map-native | Travel Map and neighbourhood pages |
The opposite of the chatbot app route
Other travel companies went the other way. Booking.com and Expedia were among the first companies to launch apps inside ChatGPT in October 2025, letting people search for stays within OpenAI’s chatbot. Airbnb AI search reverses that approach: rather than taking its listings into someone else’s assistant, Airbnb brings AI into its own app, where it controls the design, the ranking and the booking. That choice fits Chesky’s view that the chatbot format itself is the problem.
A slow start, by choice
Airbnb AI search has been in testing for most of the year. In February Chesky said “AI search is live to a very small percentage of traffic right now”, and that Airbnb would experiment with “making AI search more conversational”. The company’s new chief technology officer, Ahmad Al-Dahle, previously worked on Meta’s Llama models. Chesky told TechCrunch the product will be “iterating this very quickly” over the coming months.
The $100 Billion Behind Airbnb AI Search
Chesky’s point about scale is not rhetorical. A search change that lowers conversion by even a fraction of a percentage point would cost real money on a platform of this size.
Checking the $100 billion
Airbnb’s gross booking value, the total guests spend on bookings, was $91.3 billion in 2025. Its shareholder letters give $29.2 billion for the first quarter of 2026, up 19%, and $27.2 billion for the second quarter, up 16%, against $23.5 billion a year earlier. The 19% growth rate implies about $24.5 billion for the first quarter of 2025. Our arithmetic for the 12 months to June 2026: $91.3bn − $24.5bn − $23.5bn + $29.2bn + $27.2bn ≈ $99.7 billion. Chesky’s “$100 billion” is accurate.

Hotels are part of the picture
Airbnb is no longer only a homes platform. Its second-quarter letter says hotel nights “still represent a single-digit percentage of nights booked” but grew “approximately three times as fast as our homes business”. The newsroom post describes Airbnb AI search as covering homes, experiences and services. As hotels become a bigger share of bookings, an AI search that can weigh a hotel room against a flat for the same trip becomes more valuable to Airbnb, and more of a threat to hotel booking sites.
What conversion means here
Conversion is the share of searches that end in a booking. At roughly $100 billion a year, a change that cut bookings by 1% would move about $1 billion of spending. That is why Airbnb AI search sits behind a toggle and next to the classic search, and why the company talks about iterating rather than replacing.
The advertising question
In February an analyst asked whether AI search would carry sponsored listings. Chesky said Airbnb would get the design right first, but that “eventually, we will be looking at sponsor listings as a result of that”, possibly with an ad unit that fits a conversational flow. The fall update contains no ads. Guests should expect them to arrive later.
Airbnb's AI Support Bot Is the Proof Point
The customer support assistant is the AI feature Airbnb has run longest, and its numbers show how the company measures success.
Resolution rates are rising
In February Airbnb said the bot handled a third of customer problems without a human. In May Chesky put the figure at 40%. The second-quarter letter says “nearly 45% of issues that begin with our AI assistant are now resolved without a human agent”, with the assistant available in more than 50 languages. Airbnb also says a third-party consulting firm rated it the best AI support assistant among six major US travel platforms in a March to April 2026 benchmark.

What the models are
Airbnb has said little about the technology. Asked by heise, it said only: “We rely on a combination of open-source models and commercial models from trusted partners.” It did not answer questions about server locations or data protection when third-party models are used. European guests may want those answers before voice support reaches them.
Connect and the Travel Map
The social features are the second half of the update, launched alongside Airbnb AI search, and they build on work Airbnb started in 2025.
How Connect works
You can invite family, friends and people you have travelled with to connect. Once connected, “you can see their trips, and they can see yours”. Airbnb also suggests connections based on your past trips. In October 2025 the company let guests connect with people they met on an Airbnb Experience; this update widens that to anyone you know.
What the Travel Map shows
The Travel Map shows where your connections have stayed or are going next, on an interactive map. You can see the homes they stayed in and the experiences or services they booked, read their reviews, save favourites to your wishlist and message them in the app. The map fills as you add connections.
Privacy controls, and one open question
You decide which trips appear on your Travel Map and how much of each trip you share. You can hide or remove a trip, or block a connection, at any time. Heise noted that the announcement does not say whether trips are visible or hidden by default. When Airbnb added experience connections in 2025, it defaulted to “don’t share” if a guest dismissed the prompt. Check your settings after connecting with anyone.
Neighbourhood pages
Tapping the map opens a neighbourhood overview built “from what guests and hosts tell us and from other sources”, covering what an area is like, things to do, where to eat and how to get around. A footnote says the pages start in Paris. Engadget pointed out that Airbnb did not explain what the “other sources” are.
The New Services Around Airbnb AI Search
The update also expands Airbnb Services, the on-the-ground offers the company launched in 2025, into new categories. TechCrunch described this as Airbnb competing with hotels on the ground while using AI and its network online.
| Service | Partner or detail | Where and when |
|---|---|---|
| Meal delivery | Local restaurants to your listing | Select European cities |
| Grocery delivery | Launched in the US earlier in 2026 | Expanding to Europe |
| Laundry | Rinse; free pickup, delivery and next-day rush | Select US cities |
| Baby gear | BabyQuip; 10% off for Airbnb guests | 60+ US cities from November |
| Local rentals | Ski and snowboard gear; boats | French Alps; South Florida |
Why services matter for search
Services give Airbnb AI search more to find. The new search bar covers homes, experiences and services, so a query like “family week near the beach” can surface a home, a crib rental and a boat trip in one place. Each service also adds a transaction that happens inside Airbnb rather than on another website.
New Tools for Hosts
Hosts get their own AI features alongside Airbnb AI search “later this fall”, according to the newsroom post.
Pricing and calendars
A multi-listing calendar lets hosts change prices, availability, cancellation policies or discounts across all listings at once, or a few. Dynamic pricing recommends a price range, and with one tap nightly prices adjust automatically to daily supply and demand. Hosts can change the range at any time.
Reviews now feed the summaries
The summer release already used AI to “generate highlights from host listing descriptions and guest reviews”, according to the second-quarter letter. That means Airbnb AI search draws on what guests wrote, not only on what hosts wrote. A single detailed complaint about noise or parking can now surface in a summary that thousands of searchers read. For hosts, responding to reviews and fixing recurring problems matters more once an AI is quoting them.
Insight and presentation
An AI earnings dashboard will summarise a host’s performance, explain what is affecting it and suggest actions. Interactive 3D floor plans show guests the layout before they book. For hosts, the practical effect of Airbnb AI search is that the AI-written description of their home, not only their own text, may be what a guest reads first. It is worth checking that summary for errors once it appears.
Why Airbnb AI Search Arrives Now
The timing reflects pressure from outside the app as much as ambition inside it.
Agents that book for you
AI agents are starting to book travel directly. According to StockStory, Airbnb shares fell 6.2% a week before this update after Barron’s reported that Meta’s Muse can make bookings itself. The startup Instinct says over half of its agent’s transactions are travel, as we reported when it raised its Series C. If an agent chooses the home, the platform loses the moment where a guest browses, compares and books.
Keeping the choice inside Airbnb
Airbnb AI search is partly a defence. By making its own app better at understanding what guests want, Airbnb gives travellers a reason to start there rather than in a general chatbot. Investors reacted well: StockStory reported the shares rose 2.7% to $161.20 in morning trading on the day of the announcement.
A company built on AI internally
Airbnb has also changed how it builds software. In May it said AI wrote 60% of the code its engineers produced in the first quarter. That speed matters when the chief executive promises to iterate on search “very quickly” over the coming months.
What Airbnb AI Search Means for UK and European Users
Airbnb AI search and most of the other AI features start in the US, and Airbnb has given no timetable for other countries.
Guests
UK and European guests get the new services first: meal delivery in select European cities, groceries expanding to Europe, and ski rentals in the French Alps. Airbnb AI search, AI filters and the comparison view are US-first. The Connect and Travel Map features are not limited to the US in the announcement.
Hosts
European hosts should watch two things. The AI descriptions will summarise their listings once search rolls out locally, and the EU is preparing tighter rules on short-term rentals, which heise links to the European Commission’s affordable housing work. Both will shape how listings are shown and ranked.
When to expect it
Airbnb has promised to iterate “very quickly” and usually rolls features out in stages. Past launches, such as the AI support assistant, went from the US to Canada and Mexico within months and then to more languages. UK users may see Airbnb AI search sooner than the lack of a timetable suggests, but nothing is confirmed.
Data questions
Airbnb has not said where the third-party models behind its AI features run or how guest data is handled when they are used. Under UK and EU data protection law, guests can ask. A subject access request is the formal route for anyone who wants to know what Airbnb holds.
Airbnb AI Search FAQ
What is Airbnb AI search?
It is a new search option that lets guests look for homes, experiences and services by describing them in their own words or by voice. It sits alongside the classic search and is launching in the US first.
Is Airbnb AI search a chatbot?
No. Chesky has argued that chatbots do not work for travel. Airbnb AI search returns normal photo-led results, adds AI filters and summaries, and offers a side-by-side comparison rather than a conversation thread.
Can my friends see my Airbnb trips?
Only if you connect with them. Connected people can see each other’s trips on the Travel Map, but you choose which trips appear and how much detail to share, and you can hide trips or block connections.
Is Airbnb AI search available in the UK?
Not yet. Airbnb says the AI features start in the US and has not given dates for other countries. Some new services, such as meal delivery, are launching in Europe first.
Will Airbnb AI search show ads?
Not at launch. In February Chesky said Airbnb would eventually look at sponsored listings in AI search once the design is right.
