Symptom & Impact
Exploitation of dino-im is user-driven: the danger arrives when someone opens a hostile page, message or attachment, so exposure sits on each Ubuntu 20.04 workstation rather than on any serving path. Desktop sessions run for weeks, and the package manager only replaces files on disk — a dino-im process started before the update keeps the old code mapped until the user quits and relaunches it. Consequences are local: theft of saved credentials and session cookies, access to the user’s profile data under $HOME, and code execution as the logged-in account. dino-im is a graphical application launched by a user from their desktop session, not a system service: there is no unit to restart, and systemctl or journalctl will report nothing for it.
Environment & Reproduction
Reproduction targets Ubuntu 20.04 (focal). Confirm release and installed package:

Exercise the workload that uses dino-im while collecting:

Root Cause Analysis
Root cause is documented in Ubuntu Security Notice USN-7430-1. Canonical security maintainers shipped fixes in the corresponding dino-im update for Ubuntu 20.04; running an outdated build leaves the host exposed to the failure modes described in the advisory. Fixes land in the focal-security pocket of the main archive. Correlate apt history with the journal:

Solution – Primary Fix
Apply the corrective apt transaction referenced by Ubuntu Security Notice USN-7430-1, then reload the affected service:

sudo apt -y install --only-upgrade dino-im

For kernel / glibc / systemd / openssl advisories a reboot (or Livepatch) is required:

Solution – Alternative Approaches
If the primary upgrade is not viable, pick from these:

Hold the package so apt cannot upgrade it:

Pin a known-good version via apt preferences:

Take only the security pocket update and defer the full point-release upgrade:

Verification & Acceptance Criteria
All of these should pass after the fix is applied:
