iOS 27.2 is out, and it is the first big update to the Siri AI that Apple launched in September. Apple released it on Monday 26 October 2026, alongside version 27.2 of iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, visionOS and the HomePod software. On supported iPhones, Siri can now remember earlier conversations, draw on more of your personal data, and answer in five more languages.
The update also gives users a new privacy switch called Excluded Apps, adds smart Suggestions to the Messages app and lets Photos detect Google’s SynthID watermark. Behind the features sit 163 security fixes for iPhone and iPad, including two in Siri itself, which makes this an update worth installing promptly.
This guide sets out exactly what changed in iOS 27.2, which devices and countries get the new Siri AI features, and how the same release lands on the Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV and Vision Pro. We then look at what the new memory feature means for privacy, and what IT teams should do with managed iPhones.

What Apple Released in iOS 27.2
Apple pushed the 27.2 updates out across its whole software line on 26 October. Engadget’s report led with the Siri news: more assistant features, out today. The release notes, published in full by MacRumors and 9to5Mac, split the changes into two groups.
The short version
The first group, headed Siri AI, has five items: conversation recall, more personal context, Excluded Apps, granular text selection and five new languages. The second group, headed Other, has seven: Suggestions in Messages, Shared Albums changes, SynthID support, a new Podcasts Home tab, a Friends tab in Games, Simple Profiles in the Apple TV app, and third-party interpreters on FaceTime calls.
So five of the twelve items in the iOS 27.2 notes are about Siri AI. That balance is the story of the release.
Bars are scaled to the larger group: 5 is 71% of 7.
Why there was no iOS 27.1 for most iPhones
If you are wondering where iOS 27.1 went, it exists, but only on one phone. Apple’s security releases page lists iOS 27.1 for the iPhone Duo alone, dated 23 October, the foldable’s launch day. Every other iPhone went from iOS 27.0.1, released on 28 September, straight to iOS 27.2.
Thurrott’s report confirms the same jump on the other platforms: there was no 27.1 for the iPad, Mac, Watch or TV, so all of them move to 27.2 today.
Which iPhones can install iOS 27.2
Apple’s security notes list iOS 27.2 for iPhone 11 and later, which is every iPhone that can run iOS 27. iPadOS 27.2 covers the same iPads as iPadOS 27, including the new OLED iPad mini, according to MacRumors.
Being able to install iOS 27.2 is not the same as getting the Siri AI features, though. Those still need a newer phone, as the next sections explain.
The New Siri AI Tools in iOS 27.2
Apple’s own summary, quoted by Cult of Mac, says the update “provides enhancements to Siri AI with the ability to retain useful context from previous Siri interactions as well as draw from a wider range of personal context.” Here is what each change does.
Siri AI now remembers past conversations
The headline feature is conversation recall. In Apple’s words, “Siri AI can recall your past conversations, so you can ask Siri about something it told you before, like the restaurants it recommended last week.”
At launch, Siri AI kept a history of your chats in the Siri app. What iOS 27.2 adds is the ability to use it: you can refer back to something Siri said days ago without repeating yourself. Apple’s iPhone Duo notes describe it as the ability “to retain useful context from previous Siri interactions”, which suggests Siri keeps the useful parts rather than a word-for-word record. Apple has not published the detail of what is stored or for how long.
More personal context to draw on
Siri AI already searched your messages, mail and photos when it launched. With iOS 27.2 it reaches further. The release notes list “photos attached in Messages, Calendar event attendees, your voicemails, and better results from Safari history and Reading List.”
Each new source answers a common question. Who was at that meeting? What did the plumber say in their voicemail? Which article did I save about pensions last month? These are things Siri AI can now look up for you without you opening each app.
Excluded Apps: one setting to keep apps out
More reach needs more control, and iOS 27.2 adds it. “Excluded Apps lets you choose which apps Siri, Search, and suggestions can access, all from one setting,” Apple says.
That one setting covers three systems at once: Siri, Search and suggestions. If you keep a banking app, a health journal or a work app you would rather Siri did not read, this is where you shut it out. In earlier versions, similar switches sat on each app’s own page in the Siri settings.
Granular text selection
A smaller but handy change: you can now “select and copy just the part of a Siri response you need.” Before, copying from a Siri AI answer meant taking the whole reply. Now you can lift one address, one figure or one sentence and paste it elsewhere.
Five more languages
Siri AI launched in English only. iOS 27.2 adds French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, taking it to six languages. Cult of Mac notes that you need an eligible device “with the device language set to the relevant language.”
Adding a language to an assistant like this is more than translation. The natural language processing behind Siri AI has to understand requests, personal data and context in each new language, which is why Apple staged the rollout.
The table below sums up the five Siri AI changes in iOS 27.2.
| Siri AI change | What it does | Example from Apple |
|---|---|---|
| Conversation recall | Remembers earlier Siri chats | Restaurants it recommended last week |
| More personal context | Reads more of your data | Messages photos, attendees, voicemails, Safari |
| Excluded Apps | Blocks chosen apps from Siri, Search and suggestions | One setting for all three |
| Granular text selection | Copy part of a Siri answer | Just the part you need |
| New languages | Adds five languages to English | French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish |
Siri AI Devices, Regions and Languages After iOS 27.2
The device list has not changed with iOS 27.2. The release notes head the Siri AI section with the same line Apple used at launch: “All iPhone 16 models and later, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max.”
Which iPhones get the Siri AI features
Engadget spells it out: the Siri AI features are available on all iPhone 16 models and later, plus the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Older phones still get the rest of iOS 27.2, including the security fixes, Suggestions in Messages and the new Shared Albums tools.
If you are new to the assistant, our guide to everything new you can do with Siri AI covers the features that arrived in September, from on-screen awareness to writing tools.
Still no Siri AI in the EU or mainland China
The release notes are blunt: “Siri AI is not available in the EU or mainland China.” Thurrott adds the main exception: in the EU, Siri AI works on the Mac but not on the iPhone. In June, Apple named the Mac and Vision Pro as the EU devices that would get it, while iPhone, iPad and Watch would not initially.
The EU gap comes from Apple’s dispute with Brussels over the Digital Markets Act. MacRumors notes that iOS 27.2 does bring one EU-only change: an alternative, expanded prompt for App Tracking Transparency.
Apple kept its October promise
When Siri AI launched, Apple said it would arrive in English first and add five languages in October, as 9to5Mac reported on 9 September. iOS 27.2 delivers those five languages on 26 October, with five days of the month to spare.
That is worth noting because Siri has a long history of late features. The launch itself came with a waitlist, which we explained in why there is a waitlist for Siri AI. This time the date held.
The chart below shows the gaps between the key dates, counted in days.
Bars are scaled to the longest gap: 47 is 48% of 98, and 42 is 43%.
Languages before and after iOS 27.2
Siri AI went from one language to six in a single update. Here is where things stand.
| Question | iOS 27 (September) | iOS 27.2 (October) |
|---|---|---|
| Languages | English | English, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish |
| iPhones | iPhone 16 and later, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max | No change |
| EU | Not on iPhone; Mac yes | Not on iPhone; Mac yes |
| Mainland China | Not available | Not available |
| Remembers past chats | No | Yes |
Suggestions in Messages and the Other iOS 27.2 Features
The second half of the iOS 27.2 notes is a mix of AI features and everyday fixes. Two of them use AI directly.
Suggested Actions in Messages
“Suggestions in Messages help you take action based on the context of your conversations, like adding a Calendar invite for a dinner,” Apple says. Cult of Mac reports that the suggestion appears as a chip in the toolbar above the keyboard, and can offer to create an event or a reminder, or search your photo library.
You can choose which kinds of suggestion appear, or turn them off, in Settings > Apps > Messages > Suggested Actions. Unlike the Siri AI changes, this feature is not limited to the newest iPhones in the release notes.
SynthID detection in Photos and Image Playground
iOS 27.2 adds “support for SynthID watermarking to help identify whether an image was generated or modified with generative tools in Photos and Image Playground.” SynthID is Google DeepMind’s invisible watermark for AI-made content.
This is a notable step: Apple’s own photo app can now flag an image made by a rival’s AI. We looked at how the watermark works, and its limits, in our guide to SynthID and spotting AI content.
Shared Albums, Podcasts, Games, TV and FaceTime
The rest of the list is practical. Shared Albums in Photos now let you edit captions and comments, avoid adding duplicate photos and get a reminder before an album expires. Apple Podcasts splits its Home tab into New Episodes and Continue Playing. The Games app gains a Friends tab that shows what friends have played recently.
Simple Profiles come to the Apple TV app on iPhone, so each person in a household gets their own recommendations. FaceTime can now add a third-party sign language interpreter or live captioner to a call.
iPhone Duo, Group FaceTime and Apple Music
Some changes sit outside the main notes. The iPhone Duo gains support for Apple Pencil (USB-C), though not Apple Pencil Pro, and Edge Light, a ring light for video calls first seen on the Mac. Dual Capture, which shares the front and rear cameras at once, now works in Group FaceTime, on iPhone 17 and newer only.
Apple Music gets a new black and white icon, and the Home app adds Lock After Closing and Door Left Open alerts for compatible smart locks.
What did not ship: the new Health app
One feature tested in the betas is missing. 9to5Mac reports that Apple’s redesigned Health app appeared in early iOS 27.2 betas but was removed before release, and is still planned for later this year.
The Same Update on Mac, Watch, TV, Vision Pro and HomePod
Apple released iOS 27.2 as part of a wider set of updates on the same day. The Siri AI changes reach some of them, but not all in the same way.
macOS Golden Gate 27.2
Engadget reports that macOS 27.2 brings the Siri AI conversation recall and Suggestions in Messages, along with bug fixes and security updates. Thurrott lists the new languages and wider personal context across iOS, iPadOS and macOS. For EU users, the Mac is still where Siri AI works, not the iPhone.
watchOS 27.2
According to Engadget, watchOS 27.2 gets “the same Siri AI feature lineup as the iPhones”, and Thurrott says that includes the new languages. Apple lists watchOS 27.2 for Apple Watch Series 9 and later.
iPadOS 27.2
iPadOS 27.2 shipped alongside iOS 27.2 and shares the same security notes. The Apple TV app profiles also come to the iPad, Cult of Mac reports.
tvOS 27.2, visionOS 27.2 and HomePod
tvOS 27.2 adds American and British Sign Language versions of selected films and shows, plus a Shuffle option for screensavers, according to Thurrott. Siri AI is not part of this release for current Apple TV boxes; Thurrott says it comes later this year to the second- and third-generation Apple TV 4K.
HomePod Software 27.2 brings Sound Glow, which pulses the top light to music, to the original HomePod mini and second-generation HomePod. visionOS 27.2 also shipped, with 125 security fixes; the coverage we read did not list new Siri AI features for it.
The table below shows how the 27.2 release lines up across platforms.
| Platform | Siri AI changes | Other highlights | CVEs fixed |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone and iPad (27.2) | All five | Messages suggestions, SynthID, TV profiles | 163 |
| macOS Golden Gate 27.2 | Recall and more | Messages suggestions | 263 |
| watchOS 27.2 | Same as iPhone | New Music icon | 62 |
| tvOS 27.2 | Not yet | Sign language versions, screensaver Shuffle | 72 |
| visionOS 27.2 | Not stated | Security fixes | 125 |
The Security Side of iOS 27.2: 163 Fixes
The features get the headlines, but the security notes are the bigger reason to update. Apple’s security content for iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2 lists 163 CVE numbers in 141 separate entries, covering everything from the kernel and ImageIO to Mail and Maps.
Two Siri flaws and one Apple Intelligence flaw
Two of the fixes are in Siri. Both carry the impact line “An app may be able to access sensitive user data.” One (CVE-2026-112658) was fixed “with improved input validation”, the other (CVE-2026-112685) “with improved state management.”
A third, in Apple Intelligence (CVE-2026-86987), is more serious on paper: “A remote attacker may be able to access sensitive user data.” Apple fixed it with “improved entitlement checks.” As Siri reads more of your data, flaws like these matter more.
Bigger patch counts on the Mac
The other 27.2 releases also carry long security lists. The chart below compares the number of CVE numbers in each security note, counted from Apple’s pages.
Bars are scaled to macOS: 163 is 62% of 263, 125 is 48%, 72 is 27% and 62 is 24%.
Older iPhones: iOS 26.7.2 and 18.7.11
Apple also released iOS 26.7.2 for people staying on iOS 26, and iOS 18.7.11 for the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR, which cannot run iOS 26. Both arrived on the same day as iOS 27.2. If you manage a mixed fleet, each of those builds is the one to push for its devices.
Privacy: What Memory Means for Your Data
Conversation recall and wider personal context make Siri more useful. They also mean Siri holds and reads more about you, so it is worth thinking about before you rely on them.
Memory raises the stakes
Memory is the biggest change in iOS 27.2. A Siri that remembers last week’s request can also surface it at the wrong moment, for example on a phone shared with family. Apple has not set out in the release notes how long Siri keeps context or how to clear it. Until it does, treat Siri’s memory as you would your message history.
Voicemails and calendars are sensitive
Voicemails often hold the details people would not put in writing: medical appointments, money worries, legal matters. Calendar attendees reveal who you meet. With iOS 27.2, Siri AI can use both to answer questions. That is helpful, but it also widens what a flaw like CVE-2026-86987 could have exposed, which is a good reason to install the update now.
Excluded Apps is the control to learn
The good news is that Apple shipped the control alongside the reach. Excluded Apps is the single place to keep an app away from Siri, Search and suggestions. Spend two minutes on it after updating, and add any app holding health, money or work data you would not want summarised.
The OpenAI court filings we covered in ChatGPT in Siri showed how few people used Apple’s earlier AI features. Clear controls like this one are part of how Apple hopes to change that.
What iOS 27.2 Means for Businesses and IT Teams
For companies, iOS 27.2 is both a security update to roll out and a policy question to answer. Siri AI reading voicemails, meeting attendees and browsing history on staff phones touches the same data that AI policies are written to protect.
Patch first
With 163 CVE fixes, including flaws that let apps reach sensitive data, iOS 27.2 should go through your normal fast-track patch cycle. The same applies to macOS Golden Gate 27.2 and its 263 fixes. If you need help building a repeatable process, our IT governance team works with firms on exactly this.
Decide what Siri AI may read
Managed iPhones already have a switch for Siri AI. Apple’s device-management documentation lists an allowSiriAI restriction for iOS 27, now being moved into a newer Siri settings configuration. Whether Excluded Apps can be set centrally is not stated in the release notes, so test it on a pilot device before you promise staff anything.
Update your AI policy
Many firms wrote AI policies with ChatGPT and Copilot in mind. Siri AI with memory is different: it is built into the phone and reads personal and work data by default. Your AI strategy should say which apps must sit in Excluded Apps on work devices. Our AI models and tools hub tracks how Siri AI compares with the assistants your staff may already use.
The checklist below sums up the steps.
| Action | Why | Who |
|---|---|---|
| Push iOS 27.2 and macOS 27.2 | 163 and 263 security fixes | IT team |
| Push iOS 26.7.2 or 18.7.11 to older phones | Same-day fixes for older builds | IT team |
| Review the Siri AI restriction | Memory and voicemail access are new | Security team |
| Pilot Excluded Apps | Keep work apps away from Siri | IT with a test group |
| Update the AI policy | Assistant now remembers chats | Compliance and HR |
How to Install iOS 27.2 and Set Up Siri AI
Installing iOS 27.2 takes a few minutes on a good connection. Back up first, as with any system update.
Install the update
Open Settings > General > Software Update and follow the prompts. iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2 are available over the air now. On a Mac, use System Settings > General > Software Update for macOS 27.2.
Set up Excluded Apps
After the update, find Excluded Apps in Settings and choose the apps you want kept out of Siri, Search and suggestions. Apple describes it as “all from one setting”, so you no longer need to visit each app’s own page.
Try conversation recall
Ask Siri AI something, then come back later and refer to it: “What was that restaurant you suggested on Tuesday?” That is the quickest way to see the new memory at work.
Switch Siri to a new language
To use Siri AI in French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese or Spanish, your device language must be set to that language, Cult of Mac reports. Remember that the region rules still apply in the EU and mainland China.
Tune Suggestions in Messages
If the new chips in Messages get in the way, go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Suggested Actions and switch off the types you do not want.
