Upstream summary: In `src/havegecmd.c`, the `socket_handler` function performs a credential check on the abstract UNIX socket (`/sys/entropy/haveged`). However, while it detects if the connecting user is not root (`cred.uid != 0`) and prepares a negative acknowledgement (`ASCII_NAK`), it **fails to stop execution**. The code proceeds to the `switch` statement, allowing any local unprivileged user to execute privileged commands such as `MAGIC_CHROOT`.

haveged runs as a long-lived process on openSUSE Tumbleweed, started at boot and holding open sockets (visible in ss -lntp), so a flaw in it stays reachable for as long as the service is up. Exploitation usually means code execution in the daemon’s own security context, memory disclosure from a process holding credentials and cached client data, or a crash that takes the listener down. Workers started before the upgrade keep running the old binary until the unit is reloaded or restarted. haveged is a genuine long-running service, so restart steps do apply — but confirm the unit name first with systemctl list-unit-files | grep -i haveged, since it often differs from the package name (bind ships named.service).

Solution – Alternative Approaches

If the primary fix is not viable, choose from these:

  • Roll back via Snapper (Btrfs snapshots are taken automatically before zypper transactions on openSUSE Tumbleweed). This is the primary safety net for openSUSE administrators:

Prevention & Hardening

Reduce the chance of this recurring on openSUSE Tumbleweed:

  • Run rolling upgrades on a schedule — Tumbleweed receives a snapshot most weekdays. Stagger across the fleet so any regression is caught early:
