Symptom & Impact

NFS clients see ‘Stale file handle’ errors and df hangs.

Filehandle on server changed but client still caches the old one.

Check mount | grep nfs and try ls on the mountpoint.

Use nfsstat -m and tcpdump -i en0 port 2049 to see NFS3ERR_STALE replies.

Force unmount with umount -f /mnt and remount with mount /mnt.

Reboot client if processes hold the handle and umount -f fails.

ls and df on the mountpoint succeed and applications resume reads/writes.
